Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
From the Post, among other sources (Redskins Insider - Clinton Portis headed to injured reserve)
There will be time to analyze Portis' legacy as a Redskin since he probably won't return in '11 but as for the rest of the season that puts a heavy load on Williams and Torrain plus we just promoted Davis and signed Andre Brown ('09 Giants draft pick) from the Broncos practice squad. This is going to hurt us most in pass protection/blitz pickup since he was one of the best in the game at doing so. I expect us to do more quick, short passes and screens so McNabb isn't back there as a sitting duck on a 7 step drop. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
He has been one of my favorite Skins and I was really hoping he would pass riggins this year on the rushing list. If he doesn't come back next year thanks for the effort and memories!
|
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
He missed 5 games and we still didn't see the adjustment to fill the void in pass protection. I think he might be done as a Redskin but I kinda hope not, he still showed something even when he was out there last weekend and I don't think his career is finished.
I'm definitely going to miss his pass blocking though. He played this season like he had something to prove, and he looked pretty good in the limited time we saw. If he can come back healthy I'd give him one more season. He deserves to be the Redskins all time leading rusher and I'd at least like to see him break 10k in a Skins uniform. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
I think maybe he could stay in Washington as a backup. He has major health concerns at this point. He also hits 30 in September, and has had way more injuries and carries than other RB's in the league at his age.

He just is not healthy enough to play this season. His best bet is to be forced off for the season and try to make a go again next. I think he will return in '11 but if not, Thank you Portis, you will be missed. HTTR!!! |

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
It's been said in other threads already by myself & others, CP could prolong his career & help the skins a lot as a 3rd down rb. I hope that's the case next year. Like some other positions on the team, the lack of investment in youth is really showing at rb. At least Allen & Shan acted quickly to get some guys in.

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
So does anyone else wonder about Shanny rushing RB's back, first Torrain for the Philly game, and then CP. I was shocked when they said CP would play and was amazed at how fast that he healed from that type injury, now he is out for the season.

Agree we need him to teach these backs how to block. If he dosen't come back it's been great CP & I wish you all the best. HTTR. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
Something tells me we may see a few more quick screens to Banks and Moss as pseudo running plays
|
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
I remember getting cp's jersey when we first traded for him. He's one of my favorite Redskins ever.. Had a very good career just age caught up to him. I doubt he ever starts again in the NFL.

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
Unfortunate, considering that even though Portis was an effective runner on Sunday, this was entirely preventable by letting him heal another three weeks. And he was a guy I think we could have really used down the stretch against the Giants.
This is still a throwing team, even without CP laying people out in the backfield. It just becomes a little bit harder. |

If he is going to be a "3rd down rb", he is going to have to take a humongous pay cut - - like maybe 80% of what he's averaged over his contract to date. |

Does "Portis" and "Take a humongous pay cut" even belong in the same sentence? :cheeky-sm I think he'll probably shop around where he can get good money and if not being a starting back, somewhere he can be a 2nd string back that'll still get a good amount of carries. |

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
Damn, you would think that this was a memorial service for the late CP.
I don't think that he will be going anywhere until he is officially the Redskins All-Time leading rusher. |

As I understand it he tore an ab muscle in Sundays game so it's not related to his groin tear. |

That's actually worse, imo. Indicative of how much wear and tear his body has taken. Dude's made plenty of money, probably should just move on to the next phase... perhaps associate professor of diction at the U. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
I think we should keep him as a backup for next season unless someone gives up good value for him.

A Grade III strain, where the muscle came completely off the bone. 5 weeks is very quick to come back from this type of injury. If Portis is still a Skin in '11, great. If not, it was a pleasure watching him play in DC. |

Um, not happening. The market for injury prone, stumble prone running backs in their 30s in pretty much nonexistent. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
If he does not come back then F*&% him and the too much money we paid for him. Ok I had to be the first to hate on him because you know it will come.

I agree. CP hasnt been a top flight back for a few years now. There's no point on the Skins wasting anymore time and $ on this guy. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
I wish the guy well but time to move on.
|
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
While Portis may be reluctant to come right out and say it, the Redskins rushing record would mean a great deal to him. I think that's the main reason why he worked so hard during the off-season knowing the mark would be within his reach, providing he could stay healthy.
Don't be surprised to see him make an effort to come back next year. Shanahan believes he still has something left, so half his battle is won. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
It will be interesting to see what Shan does with the running backs next year. He could keep Williams and bring back Portis as 3rd down back or let Portis go and keep Torain and Williams and get a veteran or keep only Williams and get two new people.
Let's of options it seems. |

The bold part is likely to be the scenario, I believe.. Unless we find a gem through draft or free agency, we will have same players for RB.. |
Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
He's short of Riggo's Record then, right?

This particular injury to Portis had the muscle torn from the bone. |

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
I'm convinced that Portis will be back here next year.
He's strictly year to year at this point, but he's going to earn his way back based on his play from earlier in this season. |

Shanahan seems to think he's got quite a bit left from his comments today. If he's healthy and agrees to a deal that makes sense, I definitely think he will be back.
With his base salary of almost $7.2 million and bonuses, Portis will be paid almost $7.7 million this season. Although it is possible Portis's career with the Redskins and in the NFL could be finished, Shanahan said he believes Portis could have productive years ahead of him. "I don't think there's any question about it," Shanahan said. "He's got such a strong will. It all depends on does he come back a hundred percent? Does he want to come back and play? He's got that inner drive that most people don't have. He wants to compete. But obviously, he's got to get well." Healthy he is till the best back we have. If his deal can get reworked appropriately why we wouldn't bring him back is beyond me.

Shanny isnt going to say anything negative about CP and scare off any potential takers. The Skins need to be done with this over-paid under performer and move on. |
