Jaguars Release David Garrard

Woah! Luke McCown to start season opener

If I'm the Colts, I'm on the phone right now with Garrard and his agent

He was making a lot of $$. Guess he wouldn't take a cut?

Wow what a shocker.

Re: Jaguars Release David Garrard

I have to ask this question, as annoying as it is in many cases, it's legitimate in this case. Does Shanahan consider Garrard? He's not a world beater but he has the mobility Shanahan likes.

Shanahan would never bring him in as a starter at this point obviously, so Garrard would only go for this idea if all other teams passed him over as a contender for a starting job. But you have to wonder if Mike will view this as a reclamation project.

Jay Glazer was reporting this, for a moment I thought someone had hacked into his account. This is a shocker! So is this part of the LA Jaguars in 2012 campaign?

We've already got 2 of those. No need for another.

This could be a good thing for the Colts. Garrard >>>>>>> Collins, even if Garrard isn't going to light it up. Maybe Garrard didn't want to mentor Gabbert?

Yep...I bet the Colts are all over that.

Can't say I disagree, though I will note that Garrard has even more mobility than Beck. And obviously more experience.

But I'm not sure he gets us anywhere, even if he were to come in and develop over time.

Had he been cut many months ago, then perhaps. At this point, I'm not so sure.

I was gonna say the same thing.

I think we're settled at QB for now.

Yup. Pretty shocking. As to acquiring him, ditto SmootSmack.

Holy smokes. Stunner.

But we don't need Garrard, we have Jon Crompton.

Wonder why now with the season upon us? I guess they were thinking their rival Indy would grab him.

Hes not a fit here, decent QB

And the race for Andrew Luck is off and running!

Watching the bottom three or four teams this year is going to be hilarious.

Field Goal Kickers are going to be taking snaps under center during the last few games.

Re: Jaguars Release David Garrard

So was there some type of beef between Garrard and the team. Because that's a bit of an FU move to release him right before the start of the season.

I assume he was asked to take a pay cut and refused. Can anyone confirm that? But yeah...pretty shitty thing to do right before the season starts. I'd be willing to bet Bill Polian is on the phone w/ Garrad's agent.

This almost exactly what happened with Leftwich and the Jags just four years ago.

I'd take Colt over Garrard in a New York minute.

WTF??? I like Garrard. Too bad his receivers suck. I expect Del Rio to be gone after this season.

Re: Jaguars Release David Garrard

And if they're going to cut Garrard, why not just start Gabbert right away? Why McCown?

DG was due $8M this year.

Cap move more than anything. McCown can hold down the fort for a few games until Gabbert is ready.

Had to be. Which is why it's shocking because it's so rare. He did have a high cap number, (9 mil) but still can't see why any HC would release their starting Vet QB 5 days before the opener, without not having a personal problem with him.

I heard Pat Kirwan predict this could happen last week on NFL Radio. Not a big surprise given his contract. He said it would basically come down to him taking a big pay cut or getting shown the door.

Garrard is ass. Maurice Jones-Drew carries that team and he can't even manage the game.

Was he due to start getting his money tomorrow? Even with the cap move, the timing seems odd

Yeah the timing is odd, but as you already pointed out they did this very same thing to Leftwich 4 years ago.

Re: Jaguars Release David Garrard

Shocked at the news that they released DG. He gave them the best chance to win, and now that Peyton may be done it has left the division wide open. Seems as though you may want to keep the best option you have at QB when you have an opportunity to win the division again.

I think Eisen nailed it on this tweet...

"Rich Eisen
Peyton doutbful for who knows how long, Garrard cut last minute, Titans in flux: if this isn't the Texans year I don't know when is."

I think we are trying to stay away from guys like this.

Jacksonville Jaguars release David Garrard days before opener - ESPN
Garrard was hit repeatedly in last week's preseason finale against St. Louis and had an animated exchange with his offensive line on the sideline.

That, too, had become an issue inside the facility, with Garrard pointing the finger more often than taking the blame. He blamed an interception against Atlanta on receiver Mike Thomas and then ripped the line for Thursday's problems.
They said on SiriusXM NFL this morning that the 8m was not guaranteed until he made the opening day starting roster. Also that he was floated for a trade during the preseason but with no takers they cut him before the money became guaranteed.

No, they locked up T Jax to a lucrative extension and Carroll likes him for whatever reason. They are going to try to "develop" him. Go figure.... Poverty man's Michael Vick.
