Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Well, it took until week 12 to get our 4th win. Yikes. But a win it was, and it snapped our longest losing streak in 13 years. Let's hand out some Scud stickers, shall we?
D'Angelo Hall: after arguably his worst game as a Redskin last week, he turned in easily his best game of the season. 6 passes defensed and the game sealing pick. He was all over the place, and really stepped up. I'm still not a fan of his, but the way he responded to last week's adversity was admirable. Perry Riley: Led the team in tackles (14 I think). We've got a good young stud LB in Riley. Love his play, and I think he'll be a good one for us for a while. Roy Helu: Wow! I think this guy will be our feature back moving forward. He certainly should be. Led the team in receptions today (7), and turned in 100+ rushing, including a spectacular 28 yard hurdle/touchdown scamper. Anthony Armstrong: I know he only had one catch, but what a catch it was. A beautiful grab despite pass interference on a 50 yard bomb to give the Skins the lead for good. Kyle Shanahan: For his commitment to using Roy Helu, who's clearly our best RB right now. It paid off. Finally. We haven't had a good game running the ball in forever. 29 carries today. We still had less than 4 yards per rush, but it kept the secondary honest and was a big part of our offense being able to throw for 300+. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
HALL- Good game for sure
Helu- STUD a Matt Forte like RB REX- Great TD pass in 4th Trent Williams- This guy is crazy good Defense as a whole JH/KS/MS And Tavaris Jackson- WOW What was Seattle thinking? |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Helu was impressive and showed he can carry the load. Ride him the rest of the year.
I've gotta give some props to Rexy, that "F it I'm going deep" 50 yard bomb was clutch. |

Lesser of two evils. Starting Charlie Whitehurst would have given us an edge, too. If there's a team with a QB situation as bad as the Redskins, it's Seattle. |

I think Rex is better than Tavaris. I think Beck is better than Whitehurst. Whitehurst was garbage in the one game he played. Like super stinky nasty gross garbage. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Danny Smith - getting his unit to nail that 25 yarder at the end. (Sarc.)
Riley - got our new starting MLB. Bye bye Rocky. Gaffney - had another solid receiving game. Moss - I just feel like our offense is better w/ him playing. Helu - Ok, Mike enough w/ starting anybody else. Good job picking this guy, now lets let him run. Defense as a whole - just hanging in there playing tough again. Nice job getting some sacks at crucial times. Liking our defense with a few tweaks this off season. |
It was definitely nice to see this team run the ball consistently today. See what happens when you commit to the run game? And seattle's run d is pretty good, those were hard earned yards today.

I would have put Gaffney there instead of Armstrong though. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
It seems that crediting Kyle's gameplan for the success enjoyed by Grossman and Helu today is kind of like crediting someone for getting a multiple choice question right on the fourth try after already double guessing a wrong answer. Giving Helu the ball wasn't exactly rocket science. 31 other offensive coordinators would have figured it out quicker.
But at the end of a hard-fought win, offensive production is always better than a lack of it. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
This felt so good for once. I don't care about the draft pick and all that, it was just awesome to win.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
I'd much rather have third place in a lost season than a shot to pick in the top 3.
That's not to say a high pick is valueless, it's just not valuable enough to justify having a historically long losing streak for. |

And hyped a million times less than Romo's injury in the media. Although it got a bit old for a while during the game when the announcers kept talking about it over and over again. |

Oh, OK... |
Armstrong for having by far the best Dougie end zone dance in the league again this year.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
i literally pee'd my pants. the skins were that good.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
One more Stud that no one mentioned yet.
Trent Williams: heres why: Williams could have easily taken a couple weeks off after the injury suffered against Dallas -- and I believe if this was his rookie season, he would have -- but this is a totally differerent offensive line with big #71 on it. And so with absolutely nothing on the line, Trent plays on a cold, wet rainy day in Seattle. And for the first time this year, the Redskins erase a 10 point deficit to win. That's where my game ball goes. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Helu continues to impress me unlike any other Redskin I've seen in a long time in his postgame comments.
Just watch the first 30 seconds here. How many players do you know of after a day like he had start a press conference by individually naming each of the starting offensive linemen? Not just a generic "the offensive line blocked great" but actually naming all the linemen Roy Helu: 11-27 |

Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Let's not forget Helu is a rookie, and we don't know if there's something in practice or during games that he's not getting. And as well as he played yesterday, there were still moments where he either ran into his own man, ran into traffic when he could have avoided it, or just didn't display the elusiveness that I thought he had.
But whatever -- even after a solid offensive performance and a win, let's not miss out on a chance to bash the coaches... |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
I'm not sure Helu can sustain a heavy load over time...but there's only one way to find out.
I'm not sure Helu can sustain a heavy load over time...but there's only one way to find out.
Yeah, there's a lot of talented guys who aren't good in a featured role. I just don't think the fear that Helu could be like that at all justifies how the RBs were managed this year.
Tim Hightower got hurt in Week 7. It's Week 12. The five weeks in between were totally wasted from an offensive perspective, save the two week stretch where Hankerson made headlines. Helu is averaging 4.8 yards per carry, which would rank 9th amongst qualifing RBs if, you know, he had a chance to qualify. |

Wish his attitude reflected the rest of the team's attitude. And I agree that he may not be suited for a heavy work role, but that doesn't mean we have to play him sparingly. |

I'd give helu 20 touches a game at least

Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
I have a question about one of the penalties against Washington yesterday: At one point in the first quarter, Helu was called for an illegal chop block on third and 3, while Grossman threw an incompletion. Immediately after, the ref said that Seattle declined the penalty, setting up 4th and 3 at the Seahawks 30-yard line. I was surprised at this, because the Redskins appeared to begin lining up to go for it on 4th down.
Then, the referree announced that the Seahawks accepted the penalty, and the Skins wound up punting. Can a team decline a penalty, then change their mind after the fact and accept it when it looks like the opposing team isn't going to punt? |

Are you telling me that Danny Smith hit a 25 yard FG with his unit? That's amazing! |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Big effort by everyone today. Glad we can beat the Seachicken so I can go back with my head held-semi high and collect on bets made before the season started.
Big up to Helu...what a run. Beast Hurdle Mode! |

Glad for a win, even though it is going to hurt our draft position! I guess I am not strong enough to want them to lose....I know in my head it will be better in the log run but every time they play I cheer like a mad man! Oh well I am a fool!

This make you feel better about cheering for a win(per John Keim): 4. Before we get to a few other things, have to address this: the notion that they shouldn’t win to preserve their draft pick. Have to say, I don’t understand that thinking. In the NBA? Sure. In that league there might be four or five potential impact players in a draft. In the NFL, there’s a heck of a lot more. That’s one point. The other: who knows which players will even come out? Matt Barkley doesn’t have to, for example. Maybe he will but do you know for sure? Besides, what if the QB you really like is, say, a guy who doesn’t project to a top-5 pick for whatever reason. And you really don’t know which direction you’re going to go until after the season, when you’ve had a chance to study these players. Besides, Mike Shanahan will be very aggressive trying to move up if there’s a guy he thinks he can get. 5. But here’s the biggest reason why you don’t do it: when you’re trying to establish a foundation for a winning franchise, you don’t get there by going 3-13 and losing 12 straight. That’s unbelievably short-sighted thinking. You go places by creating an atmosphere of success. If they go 3-13, then you’d be a heck of a lot less confident in the coaching staff, right? Well, so would some of the players. That’s a lock. Is that really what you want? If they go 4-12 they have many more issues than one QB can solve. And it would take a few years longer. I’d much rather see a team do what the Redskins did today: show some fight, overcome adversity and win. Yeah, the Seahawks aren’t very good. Yeah it could end up giving them a lower draft choice. But, again, while it’s obviously important to develop talent it’s just as important to establish a culture. I’d rather see a guy like Helu, clearly a part of the future in some way, have a big game and help lead a win. |

It is a total embarrassment to the Redskins to have that broadcasting team, particularly Sam Huff. It's an out and out joke. I missed the first few possessions of the game yesterday because I was out running, but I was listening on the ESPN radio app. I heard the pre-game, and then the opening possession when we scored. In that short time, the following happened: -When the fireworks went off pre-game, Huff started going crazy, complaining about the smoke and saying someone should be fined for setting off fireworks.... Then Sonny and Larry reminded him that they do the same thing at every Skins home game. Sam shut up. -On the opening kickoff, Huff complained that the Redskins aren't setting the wedge, and that's why Banks hasn't had a big KO return. Sonny reminded him that the wedge is now against the rules for returns. To which Sam said something to the effect of "well that's a stupid rule." -On Fred Davis' first catch, Larry said, "Davis makes the grab!" Sam said, "who??" and Sonny said, "Fred Davis, Sam. The starting TE." Sam just said, "oh." -He also had no idea who Evan Royster is. Sam Huff must have compromising pictures of his boss or something, because if I was in charge, he'd be pulled off the air immediately. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Sam & Sonny are both way past their prime. I caught some of the game on the radio yesterday too and it seems that each time I hear them they somehow manage to get worse. Even my wife was joking about how bad they were.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 12 @ Seattle)
Yea it’s bad. Sonny is still pretty sharp for a man his age but they probably should just redo the whole broadcast team. At a minimum Sam belongs in a nursing home not a broadcast booth…

Thank you! I agree with Scud's choices. I also thought that Josh Wilson did not have too bad of a game as long as you throw out that absolutely terrible pass interference call. |

It is. Of course this was a terrible crew. The big PI was nonsense. They missed flagrant holds on Rak. A grounding call when a player is within 10 yds and the qb is being mugged never is called. Not to say that they didn't award us some crap calls too, but I'd rather not see the officials have such an influence on the game. |
