Greg Williams...Head Coach

I live in Texas and have seen several articles in the Houston Chronicle and several other newspapers that Greg Williams is at the top of a short list for replacing Dom Capers in Houston.

If that happens, who is currently on the staff to replace Williams? Or do the Redskins go outside the organization and hire a new D-Coordinator if this does happen?

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

Greg Blache would take over I would think....he is currently on the defensive staff and knows the system well.

Scott 12-28-2005 12:16 PM

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I second that, Greg Blache is the most likely successor...
But to add on to that, GW also stated that while he definitely wants to be a head coach again, he is only going to leave for the "right" opportunity.
I don't see Houston as a great opportunity...
KC or STL would be my guess if he does leave.

I think Greg Blache would keep our defense going strong if GW leaves....at least we'd keep the first names going...LOL!!

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I think St. Louis or Kansas City are a better fit for Williams. Both teams have a good enough offense, they just need a decent D. Houston is a huge task for Williams, and I don't think he wants to go thru that. He's always said that if the situation is right, he'll go. I don't think Houston is the right situation for him.

I'd be happy with Greg Blache as our D-coordinator. As long as we run the same system, we'll be fine IMO.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

i would think blache would go with williams but maybe he would like an assistant coaching job. I would be perfectly content with him

He'd be on my short list as well, but................ain't happnin'. Joe had that hole sewn up long ago as it is part of the incentive that brought GW to DC in the beginning! Houston may want to take a look at.............maybe Dave Wannstedt?

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I agree he won't risk his second chance in a bad team because it may not work out and probably end any chance of him to become another head coach ever again everybody would think.

Great coordinator bad head coach

I think STL, KC and maybe NYJ ( if edward leaves) are the best options for him

How does Dave Wanstedt keep getting jobs? He was a loser in Chicago, a loser in Miami, and now, he's losing at Pitt.

What gives with this guy?

I actually feel bad for the guy. Kinda like Norv Turner.....good coordinator, bad head coach.

Houston is the PERFECT opportunity for a head coach! Why?
Even if he finishes his very first season at 7-9 or 8-8, he will be considered a huge success, that team has no where to go but up. Not to mention the best player, practice and game facilities in the league, and an awesome front office that will let him call the shots.

They are probably going to finish 2-14 for the season and get the first overall pick in the draft. Williams will have a shot at Reggie Bush -or- using his savy, he can use Bush as trade bait. He could easily trade down in the draft and accumulate a whole bunch of top draft picks for the next 2 years by trading down and letting Bush go elsewhere. Not unlike when Jimmy Johnson traded Herchel Walker to the Vikes and accumulated all those picks that built the core players for Dallas's Super Bowl years in the early '90's.

I have to disagree about Houston being the wrong situation, it has got to be the best.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

GW is going to KC if Vermeil is out. KC is a class organization and will give him the time to make them a winner. I still don't think he is cut out to be a head coach though. He deserves the shot.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I am still wondering if GW fits into this secret that Gibbs has leaked out about Snyder doing something great for the future of the Skins a couple weeks ago, but they cannot release it at this time. I hope they have come up with a timeline and a deal that puts GW in as HC after Gibbs finishes up in a year or two.

Your right! Brother Norv is about ready to travel once more. Maybe he'll be coordinator for Dave again. Guaranteed, some team will take a flyer on him. Not very many decent proven coach's available. Like QB's

Ihave said in several post that GW is not going anywhere and that he will take over when Gibbs leaves. It will be a team he help to develope and he knows Snyder pays better than any other owner in the NFL.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

From what I have read in the recent past about Williams is his kids are all in highschool, I think one kid is in or approaching their senior year. They love the school they are in and the friends they have made in the area. Williams mentioned he did not want to uproot his family at this important time in their lives.
Plus he is the highest paid assistant in the league. It is not about money. It would have to be about staus (ego) and being the head coach.
However it is no secret he is next in line when Gibbs steps down in year or two. Does he really want to go to a rebuilding team and uproot his family again or wait a year or two to be head coach at one of the most prestigious franchise and city in the NFL? Those are the two questions he needs to answer for himself this offseason.

However, I know he is from St. Louis, he has family there and that might be enough to get him to leave. Anything can happen.

If it were me I would wait. There is no question he will get the Head coach job here soon. Plus given the choice to live in St.Louis, Houston, KC, Dallas or DC area, I would choose DC area. However I was born and raised in Bethesda so I am biassed. :D

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I just don't see Williams go to a dysfunctional organization that needs rebuilding once again. I don't see him leaving the Skins at all. Hell, I can see Gibbs abdicating the Head Coach role and stay on as an offensive coordinator before he lets him go :p

You may be on to something there. I have no-doubt, like many others that part of the deal for GW coming here in the first place is some arrangement (if things work out) that he gets the team when Joe leaves.
Danny and Joe are innovative thinkers. Joe may still be here fulfilling his role and contract while he lets GW have more of the helm sooner than later schooling him for head coach while freeing himself of some of the duties he has, for other things

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I think it depends on where we go this season, If we make it to the superbowl or win the bowl Gibbs will leave and Williams will take over. I think Snyder won't let Williams go like he let Lewis go.

hurrykaine 12-28-2005 02:40 PM

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

Williams will leave for St Louis, and Blache will stay. One would expect G. Williams to leave on good terms with Snyder and Gibbs without poaching all the assistant defensive coaches (except maybe for Steve Jackson). Blache and Lindsey would then continue on in DC as Def Coord., and Asst. Def Coord.

I would love to see us make Williams head coach, and follow that up with the signing of Mike Martz as assistant head coach, that would be a great duo maybe the 2 best coordinators in the buis.

I think we need to keep the staff the same as much as possible. Due what ever possible to keep that staff together, no turnover is the key to consistent playoffs and championships

Mike Martz? I'd hate to see him working for the Skins in any capacity...not even as the ball boy's assistant. I really don't want another Spurrior "spread them out" era.

why in the world is everyone annoiting greg williams as the next great head coach of the redskins.he scares me to death running the whole show.maybe another good coordinator but not head coach guy.im not sold on his ability to run the whole thing.the overall intensity level couldnt be sustained for a whole season without problems.

i think he's learned a lot from gibbs, and he would already be in a good situation(hopefully)...as long as we have a good offensive coordinator i think they would be ok

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I think Gregg Williams could be lured away by the Texans. They'll probably have the first pick in the draft aka Reggie Bush. They have a mediocre QB, but with Bush and Davis they would have a great running game. On top of that, they have Andre Johnson who is a great young reciever.

As for the D, they don't have great personnel, but he apparently feels like he can succeed without amazing talent.

I think the Texans could be the right situation for him.

However, I was thinking that if Sherman gets the axe he should consider the Packers if he can get Favre to stay for a year or two.

Funbunchfan 12-28-2005 05:48 PM

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I'm hoping that he realizes that he will be Coach Gibbs successor and waits for his opportunity in Washington. Although that scenario seems like a far shot at the moment.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I'm not a big fan of Williams the coach. Maybe he'll turn into Bill Belicheck cause he sucked in Cleveland, but I'm not so sure he's a good head coach.

Sammy Baugh Fan 12-28-2005 06:15 PM

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

Like I know anything but my thoughst are....

Dan Snyder does not have a salary cap on coaches and GW is making more money then many Head Coaches in the NFL. He will stay here until Gibbs gives him the team rolling at full steam. Gibbs will be here for his full 5 years unless he get's a Super Bowl at which time he will move up to be his garanteed President of the Skins and part Owner and GW will be the Head Coach.

But not stepping into a team he has not had his hands on but a team he has drafted for, for 5 years leading up to taking the Head Coach spot.

It's a win/win to stay here and make fat coin, have stable home and be a Head Coach to a team he built.

Also the food is good around here and ya gotta love the traffic!
lol

peace
mike

Here's Mort's take on GW:

Patti (DC): Do you think that Greg Williams will leave Washington to take a head coaching job? If so, where do you see him going?

Chris Mortensen: I don't think Greg Williams takes any job. He would probably jump for the Houston Texans job, but I think they'll hire an guy with a background on offense. I think Redskins owner Dan Snyder will do everything he can to keep Williams around.

EternalEnigma21 12-28-2005 07:28 PM

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

I hope he stays and could justify it for him if he needed some help. He's had his say on guys he's drafted the past 2 years with our first overall picks... and he's able to build his team the way he wants it, and he's learned offense from the best in the business. Not only that but maybe gibbs would stay on in some capacity (just so he has some family time away from the facilities) to perhaps train him on how to be an effective head coach, and how to avoid the mistakes he apparently made in buffalo.

Re: Greg Williams...Head Coach

Gregg Williams does not hide the fact that he is a big time family man, with that being said, I think that he will do whatever is best for his family and I am not talking about money I am talking about how he said that his children and wife like it there in the D.C. area so I think that will weigh more than any head coach job...
