Shawne Merriman

OK he's a local kid so I figure we have a few homer's on this board what do you think of Merriman? He look's like the second coming of Jason Taylor, he's 6'4" a little light at 245lbs but he defiently has room to put on 15 to 20lbs, he look's to me like a player William's could have a lot of fun with going after the QB.

Not worth a first round pick, even if we traded down. He's solid, but I don't think he's an immediate starter.

Big C 01-06-2005 06:47 PM

who is he, never heard of him

Daseal 01-06-2005 06:48 PM

D lineman who's coming out early from Maryland.

Not very educated on the guy. Do you think he would be worth a second rounder if we took a WR in the first?

jamf 01-06-2005 07:26 PM

if he is listed as 6'4" 245 lbs. he probably is more like 6'1 220lbs.

Daseal 01-06-2005 07:46 PM

He's projected late first early second rounder. Since we don't have a second rounder... He's a solid player from what I've seen, but nothing spectacular. Certainly has the talent that could be moulded, but not someone I'd pin our defensive line woes on.

SeasonTicketHolder 01-06-2005 09:06 PM

I've seen him play a lot, very fast, not a big guy obviously. Probably not worth a first round pick, but I would consider him if he fell to the second or third round.

aehs77 01-07-2005 02:09 AM

yea he is definately undersized but he makes up for it with his speed and power

heybigstar 01-07-2005 02:26 AM

he is a great athlete, but may be more suited for LB in the NFL at his size...
obviously we are stacked at LB, but then again, should we follow the ravens "draft the best player available" strategy?

Daseal 01-07-2005 07:38 AM

heybigstar: If he's the best player available at #9, we should really trade away all our picks this year.

The Ravens had a shot at Terrell Suggs - huge difference.

BDBohnzie 01-07-2005 09:31 AM

Merriman is a monster...however, he played a hybrid LEO position in Gary Blackney's defense...DE/LB...and with his size, as heybigstar stated, he's best suited to play LB in the pros...

his junior year ('04) he was in the ACC top 10 in tackles (85), sacks (8.5), tackles for loss (17), and forced fumbles (3, led ACC). the sporting news named him a 2nd team all american...1st team All ACC

it'll be a huge loss for the MD defense, which kept their sorry ass offense in plenty of games this season...

Duffman003 01-07-2005 06:44 PM

I think we should trade down at least once so we can get another 1st round pick next year and a second rounder this year and hopefully pick this guy up.

Onyx00 01-11-2005 03:19 PM

I totally agree, Merriman is solid and consistent---take a look at some of his tapes, even this past season, He Hits Hard

sportscurmudgeon 01-11-2005 07:24 PM

Unless he is a "workout wonder" at the combines, you will have a shot at him in the thrid and probably the fourth round too. If he is unimpressive at the combine workout in Indy or if he shows up with even a minor injury, you can get him on the 6th round.
