You said it yourself, Reid is a limited football player that needs special treatment. He is a one trick pony, situational receiver that is physically weak, injury prone and has limited toughness. As such it would not be wise fiscally to sign Reid to a big contract as your #1 TE.
Reid's future in the NFL is as a player that comes off the bench. He is not a #1 because he can not last, he is not durable enough to be a #1 TE for any team.
