Re: Redskins Free Agency Thread
Regarding Scherrf, do we really think extending him is in the long-term best interests of the franchise?
Don't get me wrong, Scherrf is one of the few "blue chip" players we have on the team. He is an elite talent. But that's kind of the problem. He will rightfully expect a contract which makes him the highest paid guard in the league. I read somewhere that we already have one of the highest paid offensive lines in the league. With all the needs the team has, can we really afford to devote even more money to the position group? I understand it would free up some cap space in 2019. But after that, we'd be committing a significant portion of our cap to Williams, Moses, and Scherrf.
Unless Scherrf is willing to give us a hometown discount, I think we might be better suited to transition tag him next year and see if we can get something of value for him from another team. If a market doesn't develop, then pull the tag to enable us to get a compensatory pick in 2021.
Alternatively, I would be all for extending him if we think we'd be trading Williams/Moses at some point in the next year or two. Ultimately, I just don't think its prudent to pay big money to 3 guys on the O-line.
