Because if the price is too high for the latter guy you might have to settle for scraps.
Tannehill was looked at as average in Miami because Gase is a terrible coach, Tennessee picked him up for scraps and look at him now. If a coach likes the talent and thinks a guy just needs some coaching up he will look into acquiring him.
If you're saying you disagree with Ron's evaluation of Darnold you are basically saying you disagree with Ron's talent evaluation skills at qb.
