The story behind the Blackhawks is their first owner (who was a WW2 commander of the 86th Infantry Division) named the Blackhawks because Chief Black Hawk served in that division, and the division was nicknamed the Blackhawk division. Modern Blackhawk helicopters are also named after Chief Black Hawk.
Unfortunately the problem with your argument is that the
same people who went after the Redskins for their name are also going after every other sports team named after a Native American. The Cleveland Indians announced last year they are going to be changing their name after this season too. IMO, it's only a matter of time before the rest fall. Native American names and imagery are on the way out.
Honestly if we changed the name to reflect some other untarnished fighter from history I'd be cool with that. Problem is there aren't many left whose names haven't been sullied with time.
