The wife (then my girlfriend) and I would get up on gamedays, make breakfast, and walk downtown to meet some friends at a tailgate, then just stroll into the stadium. It's right in the heart of downtown, and so easy to deal with. I guess it's different in small towns. Plus they don't sell booze in the games, which really helps as far as morons in the stands.
FedEx field is such a stupid, overpriced, clusterf*ck of an experience. I could care less if I never go to another game there.

sadly your experience with the swamp sounds like my experience at a ravens game this year. woke up, walked to a breakfast joint, ate some eggs and sausage, walked down to fed hill had some drinks, walked over to pickles had lots of drinks, walked to stadium, great views and fans were very polite. i has in line to take a piss and a bills fan said he couldnt believe how nice raven fans were and that he expected to be killed tailgating but didnt have one bad incident.
the same cant be said for fed ex, but im sure a ravens steelers game is a diff story than ravens bills.
