I was really pulling for him to break Riggo's record this season. He played GREAT when he was able to, even in his last game. Amazing how RBs consistently hit that wall right around age 30.
Somewhere, there is this mathematical table made up by some really smart guy, that shows all the great running backs, their age season by season, and their amount of carries and stats.

What you see is that it's not so much their age, as the total number of carries. When they hit a certain number of carries, it's all downhill from there. Earl Campbell was the only guy who was the exception on that chart, but you can see the other greats. Its why Ricky Williams is still so productive, because he hasnt hit that career number of carries.

Unfortunatley, Portis hit that number of carries i believe 2 seasons ago, so what we saw is pretty much right on the money according to that chart. If somebody can find it for me, that would be great. It really is a great learning tool.
