I don't doubt that they do, which is why it needs to be said that tight end is only a strength on this team in theory. If you're not going to use your top two tight ends like starters, then all you have is really nice depth. I am not going to hold Fred Davis accountable for clearly outshining the role on the depth chart he has been handed.

I have never been a "trade a TE" guy, and I don't even know if Cooley with grab a fourth round pick if put on the market (maybe with his contract he could get a conditional two), but its apparent that we're simply not going to maximize the value of having two starters at TE while Fred Davis is under contract. I think they like Fred Davis, but I don't know what the offensive coaching staff is going to look like in 2012, and I think that's going to be a big determinant in whether this is his last year as a Redskin.

And I think having depth, even at a position like TE, is highly underrated. Fans don't seem to know how to react when there's an overqualified vet buried at a position behind another vet. I think it's valuable for the football team. But it also means that we won't be extending the contract to pay above market rate for that depth.
