Actually reports here in Eagle-town are saying that he was planning on coming in and signing the tender this week to play for the $5 million. The Eagles heard that, and they pulled the offer off the table so they could have cap room to resign a few other players (maybe Brian Westbrook, John Runyan, Sheldon Brown?) to long term extensions.
Reid let him go because he felt he has good DTs already in Rayburn, Patterson, Grasmanis, and Hollis Thomas. If he brought Simon back he would have had to cut a pretty good DT just in the roster numbers game. But the move also gives them $15 million in cap room right now. Imagine that. They can give Brian Westbrook a $10 million bonus if they want, in the form of a roster bonus so the cap figure hits all this year. Then next year and beyond, Westbrook would count against the cap as if he were some rookie 5th rounder. I hate them so much, but they're the masters of smart cap management.
