Lavar to End
I heard from a buddy of mine, that our coaching staff is debating whether or not to move Lavar to Defensive End because they were happy with Lamar Marshall. Have any of you guys heard the same thing. Do you think it would be a good move or a bad one?

I don't like it. It's not his natural position, and it's not like he's the best pass rusher either. I'd rather have Chris Clemons play DE.
But who knows, maybe with some coaching he can become one. But I don't like it at all. |

Where did the rumor start? There's a lot of talk that goes on in the offseason. 99% turns out to be false. There has been rumblings of this idea here, but haven't heard any news sources yet say it yet.
I guess it would be possible, but I can't imagine LaVar would be happy about it.

Stop it...Lamar Marshall did a nice job but come on. We are going to play Lavar out of position to accomidate Lamar Marshall? If the Redskins think that little of Lavar's ability they should trade him away for draft picks and draft a real DE. Lavar is a LB and a great one if he could ever stay healthy and in the same system for more than 16 games. That's a terrible idea...

Bad move, he'd get abused.. He's not physical enough to play DE, he's an amazing linebacker, but he'd get swallowed up at DE..

Stop this horrible rumor NOW! Lavar is not an DE and he is 5x better than Marshall at the LB position. Clemons and new pass rushing DE will do fine in 2005.

I think GW will use lavar a lot like he did Marcus Washington this year, as a rush linebacker. The good thing about GW is he's players play mulitple roles. I think Lavar will be used as a rush linebacker, but he'll drop into coverage and sometimes he'll put his hand down. All I know is that GW knows what is best and I'm guessing Lavar will reach his full potential sometime in the near future. Aww man I can still remember that Falcons game when he droped Vick.

Apparently, people on this board know more about defensive schemes and LaVar than Marvin Lewis, who used LaVar as a DE and squeezed 11 sacks out of the guy. As for the stupidity of moving someone to a different position....guys like Michael Boulware, Terrell Suggs, the Fridge, John Riggins, et al have shown its not so crazy to make such changes where appropriate.

I'm not going to say it's stupid to send LaVar to DE, but I AM going to say that it's truly not necessary right now.
We have one of the top ranked defenses in the league and after the draft and off-season, it's only going to get better. Everyone seems to forget that in addition to LaVar coming back, Matt Bowen will also be back who provided a lot of early season sacks. Even though LaVar was used as DE for Marvin Lewis, I say that he's also been battle-tested as his natural LB position and I feel that rather than rocking the boat, I think we should continue to use him as LB. I agree with jbcjr14 in that LaVar is infinitely better than Lemar Marshall at LB.

My bet is that GW will have a ton of packages that he uses each game. Some with LA playing end almost all game, i.e. playing against a passing team. Others where he will stay at backer on 1st and 2nd down, and I think he almost always will move up to end on 3rd.
With as much speed as our Defense will bring to the table next year I could see as many as 16 players playing all over the field and keeping our whole unit fresh. |

Very true... even if they DO want to use LaVar as a DE, I would say at least keep his official position as LB. I remember he and Lewis did not get along so well.

I think we will see GW using 4 linebackers next season (on occasion). Let the offense guess who is coming!!!

I, too would love to see him try to add that in the offseason. Man, that would mess up the offense to see 4 down linemen and then one of them drop back as a linebacker.

I expect Williams will use LaVar at DE at times just like Lewis did. As for a full-time switch I highly doubt it.
