I thought it was a fairly well known fact that the vast majority of Native Americans aren't offended by the name. The question you should be asking is: "Who are we to tell the Native Americans what they should be offended about?"

Do we know that? The last scientific survey done was in 2004. A lot of opinions can change in 10 years. I know we all can find anecdotal evidence to support the issue one way or the other, but to get the full picture we genuinely need to be asking Native Americans how they feel in as unbiased as possible. With the amount of attention this issue is receiving however, I am not sure that opportunity will arise.

I was basing my post off two things: the recent, unscientific poll that showed that 90% of Native Americans aren't offended, and Native Americans that have come out and said they didn't find the name offensive.

The people who are against it don't just find the name "Redskins" offensive, they find any use of Native American imagery or stereotyping (ie the Indian's logo or the tomahawk chop) offensive. As BaltimoreSkins said, they find the term Redskins to be the most offensive of the bunch so they are going after that first and then hoping it cause a domino effect and everything else will change.

Well I agree 100% about the indians. Ive referenced that a few times. The rest of those nicknames are not really politically incorrect. I think Redskins would be the equivilant of say the ...California Palefaces.

I do not think the logo is what this group finds offensive. I know the colors have nothing to do with it either. Imagine as a white person or a black person or an asian person....a team with a face from your origin....George Washington looking dude or MLK as the emblem - no problem. The nickname however is the "honkeys" or the "n&@ers"? - problem. Obviously those slang references are alot more volatile because of modern day society and racism for the most part has drawn away from the native americans and what happened to them hundreds of years ago. This particular group and handfuls of others consider redskins a slang term. Again - what if it was the palefaces or yellowskins or darkskins? I guess the real crux of the matter is how do you feel about those names? If they offend you as a white, black, or asian person than How do you justify Redskins?

So they find the framed picture of medicine crow in my living room offensive? I disagree entirely. I think the name "Redskins" has everything to do with this. I would understand your point if we were talking about nazi germany. How any reference or imagery of nazi-ism could be seen as offensive, but this is completely different. There is absolutely nobody up in arms about the use of native american imagery? Hell you can go to any reservation or any part of the country with a native american presence and buy native american art, imagery, head dresses, statues, etc etc etc. from native americans.

Really the name change you can change it no matter what. Despite the controversy, it will still remain Redskins. That is if you can come up with a creative name!

I just find it interesting that the richest Native American tribe in the country is on this warpath (pun intended) to rid the country of "racial epitaphs" in the name of everything good and moral, but see no wrong in making their millions off of people's gambling addictions. They should definitely do the right thing and close all of their casinos.

So unless they put up with racial slurs (if you feel Redskins to be one is another story), they cannot capitalize on gambling like white americans do?
