Re: Willie Parker a Skin
Yeah my first concern was that Willie can't play tackle. I mean since we signed him we basically can't do anything at O-Line from here on out. I guess that they have a plan.

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
The brilliance of this signing can only be understood within the context of our limited draft choices. Shanny/Allen have just five picks unless we acquire more and they're somewhat conspicuously signing FA's such that the only position we absolutely must upgrade is OT. I see us taking two OTs in the draft...everything else is pretty much up in the air.

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I don't think we'll draft a RB. If we do it'll be one with Return abilities, because thats a big need for us.

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I think if we can get each of these three RBs to embrace a limited role spread around in thirds, then we could have a pretty solid run-by-committee backfield. It's obviously very temporary given their age, but Allen/Shanny know we have other big needs in the draft on both sides of the ball and only 5 picks to address them. We could probably get away with not drafting a back this year. I don't love the idea, but Shanny's offenses have had monster rushing years with lesser backfields than we have as of today.
Certainly it would be fun to draft a guy like CJ Spiller or Ryan Matthews, but would that help us more than a top flight lineman, QB, or LB? For this upcoming season, I'm not so sure.

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I think Alridge has upside because of his Shanny-treasured speed as well as the fact that, of our current backs, he alone plays special teams. I hope Alridge is working on that fumble-itis.

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
Willie is the best back-up ever! (ha ha ha!)
Ok, here are the stats, Portis is better in the following categories: Yards per carry, yards per game, double digit TD seasons, over 1,200 yard seasons, 20+ yard carries, 40+ yard carries, 3 times as many receiving yards, and a WAY higher passer rating (lol). Both have 2 pro-bowls, but CPs last one is more recent. People are silly. They think of "Fast Willie" and grin, talking about how he should take CP's place when Portis is better in every statistical category that matters. Think about it. Willie's best season was 1,494 yards in 2006. Portis had 1,487 in 2008 with a crappy o-line. He's also got 3 seasons in the 1,500s... so to me there is no comparison. AND HE'S A YEAR YOUNGER THAN WILLIE!?!?!? |

Dirtbag359="Maybe Portis ends up being the odd man out." jdc65="I think Portis will not be on this team past camp." First of all, Why is it that every time i defend CP people act like either i AM him or that i'm his biggest fan!? My current favorite Skin is London Fletcher, followed closely by DeAngelo Hall, Cooley, and THEN Portis. None of who am I more devoted to than my altime favs Darrell Green, Art Monk, and Sean Taylor. Portis is the friggin man and I will not let one concussion and a few bad statements change my whole opinion of him. Sorry if my post seems unwarranted. It's not in direct response to many posts here. My friends are doggin' me about it. Either they are like, "Ha ha! New people in charge and they are STILL doing the same thing!" in reference to grabbing players past their prime... but mostly i'm getting it from friends that think that Fast Willie is guaranteed the #1 spot cuz Portis is old and LJ is slow. Granted, the one that is picking on me the most is a Steelers fan... As for your opinion... i kinda agree. But to me, the only thing that will REALLY make him better is a better O-line. |

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
Prediction of RB position battle:
1. Portis (starter due to effectiveness running and pass pro) 2. Johnson (short yardage and expanded Betts role) 3. Parker (change of pace back) Log it.

Fast Willie isn't guaranteed the #1 spot at all. He probably has more to overcome than Portis and Johnson. Some people hate Portis so they ignore the facts. Portis is the youngest of the three. Portis has a great track record in this coach's system. Portis' injury was a concussion not a blown out knee and I believe he would have come back earlier if they had anything to play for. I would argue that Portis has less doubts than Johnson and Parker. Let the other team's fans say what they want. When our runningbacks are dumptrucking them you can laugh at all of them. |
