Yeah, right. The Manning family isn't known for philantrophy are they?

Not sure why Peyton's contract is even being brought up. It's really simple. If he retires, he doesn't get paid. (Including guarantees) The guarantees are there if he does play and the team cuts him. That part he'll get to keep.

But because he's injured, he's entitled to the entire guarantee unless the Colts can prove he retires healthy.

So the Colts can go after the bonus money, but it will just make the situation really ugly.

He was injured before that contract. A bit different than a injury after it's signed. We really don't know unless we see the details of the contract. I couldn't imagine them not having language to cover that serious neck injury. Then again, they have insurance for stuff like this.

Probably not legally.

If the injury was known pre-contract and no waiver or exemption exists, then standard CBA rules apply. It's not like Manning was deceiving the ownership about his injury. If the ownership was worried about its extent, they should have written it into the contract. If they didn't, or didn't do "due diligence" to find out the extent of the injury - too bad they lose.

On top of that, not even sure if it matters under the CBA. It may be an unwaivable term: retire with injury, get full guarrantees as if you had performed the contract in its entirety.

I mean, they are the ones that entered into huge contract with an injured and older QB. They took the risk on his being able to continue his performance at a high level. They may have lost that gamble with bad reprecussions on many fronts.

Apparently, the contract does contain an out clause, but it looks like it applies only to a portion of the bonus:

Quote:
Manning signed a five-year, $90 million deal at the end of July, but if he never plays again after undergoing a third neck fusion procedure, the Colts would pay Manning $26 million this year, and there are two separate clauses for $28 million for next year - one for the Colts exercising Manning's option bonus and another for declining it.
Manning contract has out clause for Colts | National Football Post

So, as I read the article, it looks like Manning gets 26 millon this year but may not get anything else.

(Sidenote: I know Manning is uber talented and deserves to be paid at the top of his craft, but, sometimes, I stop and think of these numbers and it just boggles my mind).

That money is a drop in the bucket when you add up all the sales from merchandise, tickets, etc that Peyton drummed up for the Colts. Probably wouldn't even equal .01% of the total profits.

And the 26Million doesn't include any of Peyton's take from Jersey sales, ad revenues etc. The simple point is that that number is mindboggling seems to be a simple point indeed, regardless of everything else involved.
