Because they were cut, not someone with an expiring contract.

This. Cut players can sign immediately.

That makes no sense to me though. You still a FA whether you were cut or on an expiring contract. Seems like it should be the same for everyone.

A contract expires at the end of the league year which is next week. Thats why roster bonuses happen on the first day of the new league year.

When a player is cut he is no longer under a valid contract and is free to look for other teams either immediately or after clearing waivers depending on how many years he has in the league.

Thank god I was worried we'd have to hear about him all offseason

Holy cow..so all these analysts that said he was coming to Washington were wrong??? I am astounded!!! Jokes aside...I'm really surprised the Pats did this...certainly doesn't give their fans much hope for this season again.

That was one of THE laziest storylines of the offseason. I'm also glad I won't have to hear people complaining about it as well.

Makes sense to bring him back as a bridge QB given that they are likely to draft a new guy. He knows the system and who else are they going to sign for that money that can at least be effective?

I don’t think I’m going out on a limb to say Cam was NOT effective last year.

Re: Around the NFL: NFL Offseason

Teams still over the 182.5 cap

Rams -33.9M
Bears 19
Eagles 17.9
Falcons 10
Packers 2

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space/

What if the Rams arent cap compliant by Tuesday?

Per overthecap there are still a few that seem non-compliant. The penalty is supposed to be a combination of fines, loss of draft picks and cancellation of contracts.

Quote:
The NFL's cap is a hard cap that the teams have to stay under at all times, and the salary floor is also a hard floor. Penalties for violating or circumventing the cap regulations include fines of up to $5 million for each violation, cancellation of contracts and/or loss of draft picks.
