Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!

While I dread another Trung Candidate/Chad Morton situation at RB, the fact of the matter is that Portis is done here. He'll have a Jamal Lewis flash in the pan somewhere else, mainly because he'll finally get motivated after being cut, but that will be his last 1,000 yard season.

Yes, I can blame him. He's highly overpaid & doesn't perform all the tasks required of him, i.e. practice. I know he's been banged up over the years, but I don't buy all of it about him being that hurt during every week (this week's an exception, he def. shouldn't play).

But the main problem is he's no longer good enough to get away w/his selfish ways. He misses holes, even if there only there for 2 yard gains, he stumbles over his & the line's feet. He just doesn't look much like a starting nfl rb this year. I wasn't surprised that Betts came in & looked sharper. I know he got better blocking but he looks much more explosive & decisive than CP.

He'll have to practice if he goes somewhere else too.

Thats exactly why he will be out of football if/when he leaves the team. Any other team is going to require that he practices, and that will be why he will stay unsigned. His attitude, work ethic, and salary demands, will overshadow his natural ability (or at least his former natural ability).

That's why it's too hard to see where Portis is really at right now. All indications say that he is done, like Shaun Alexander, but with our team in shambles, it's hard to tell.

I do know the other backs looked much better than portis. Hit the line harder, more burst, more speed.....

Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!

Did anyone notice in that article about Betts in today's wash post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...10638.htmlthat ) that S. Smith takes a veiled jab at Portis about his practice habits. Smith spoke this way when S. Lewis was brought in, he didn't directly say it but strongly implied his opinion.

Zorn last year made a comment about Portis not practicing of course. I wonder if essentially he & Smith are happy that Betts will be starting?

The coaching staff is probably more vocal about it because they have nothing to lose at this point.

I think the effectiveness of the running game sans Portis backs you up OP.

I agreed with you before but there wasn't any way to quantify the effect.
But the Falcons game was the clincher for me, the OL play was spotty Monty was getting pushed back all game.
But Betts and Rock were running hard and were able to get all the yards that were out there.
Portis hasn't been healthy all year and i think he's hasn't been running hard and he's been leaving some hard yards on the field.

it was 24 to 3 at half time......the falcons almost never had to play in their base defense because they knew you guys would have to pass to get back in the game.....they were willing to give up meaningless yardage to a backup running back because they knew it had no effect on the game

running against nickel defenses is a lot easier than running against the base 4-3 that the falcons bring heavy pressure on
