Jackson Signing

B grade. First, not signing Darby was the right choice. I wouldn't have paid him $8M a year, much less $10M+. He is still a massive injury risk and he got toasted WAYYYYYYYYY too much last year against better teams. Remember all those receivers sprinting open through our secondary like it was a combine passing drill? Yes, LB and safety part of problem, but so was CB. FO got it right not bidding high for Darby. That being said, his departure leaves a gaping hole at CB, and honestly we could draft one first three rounds after this signing in a deep CB draft and still not be drowning in talent at position. Fuller is best as a slot CB. Hopefully we draft a 3rd starting caliber CB in draft and let Fuller play slot. Also, given that we now have $24M spent at CB, we really can't afford any more big signings so need to look to draft for one more solid CB.

I have always preferred true cover corners to press corners, ala Darrell Green. If you're going to rely on slower press corners, you need an Earl Thomas at FS (FS is still only position on roster we have NOTHING), and even then, such players often get beat in critical man situations (see Richard Sherman). Jackson was one of better CBs in FA, in what was admittedly an uninspiring CB class. He is a pure man cover corner with decent size and good speed. Most knowledgeable observers would say he is one of top-10 man cover corners in NFL. He is a guy you can put on #1 receivers. He probably signed here for short deal because teams not paying huge money in FA this year as much, especially given deep draft at CB, and figures he'll put up mind blowing stats behind our DL opposite Fuller and get one more big payday at 30 or 31. He is very slight of build as man corners often are, is not a thumper when tackling, is not durable, nor is he truly elite (though our DL should make him look much better), and price paid is fair. Not signing him to longer deal when he will be 30 and because of injury risk is smart. He is a pure cover guy who can stay with receivers step for step and has good instincts when ball in air. Some see Jackson as one of better CBs in FA and call this a great deal because we got one of better CBs available, but it is just a good deal because not many good CBs were/are available in FA. Top corners make $20M or so, and Jackson is now one of top-ten paid corners in NFL approximate, on lower end. This was a fair deal, neither an egregious overpay, nor a bargain. I like signing a better pure man corner for a few million a year more rather than signing a lesser player cheaper. We needed a true #1 CB and signed one. We now have 2 CBs making top-20 money at the position, they'd better perform like it. Better teams fill high-leverage positions with drafted players, you can't sign high-priced FAs at CB,LT,QB,WR,DE, etc. As of now, we have a drafted WR and DE, and big-money FAs at QB and CB. Hopefully we draft a CB, LT, etc. in draft. Overall, we paid a corner which is usually ranked top 15-25 in CBs in NFL, top-10 money at the position. That's free agency, you always overpay for better players, but we couldn't leave gaping hole at CB1. A solid B signing.

We aren’t in bad shape, but obtaining another Tackle in the draft wouldn’t be a bad thing...but I’m not worried with Schreff locked in.
Christian is a grocery bagger. Charles is hopefully a swing tackle. Yes, obtaining a true franchise LT would be sensible. Lucas is great value, but not elite, you would like an elite player at LT guarding blindside. Moses is rolling up on 30. . .

What big money FA QB do we have. Fitz at 10M is bargain basement money for 1st/2nd string qb

Signed him for less than the Griffen contract, can't hate on that and filled one of the four key positions. Still think we will pick up a third corner in the draft, Jacksons three year deal ties nicely in parallel with a rookie contract, but not now a pressing need in the first round

Any player $10M+ is big money. You can have a dozen such players most usually, given that many $10M+ contracts will be $15M-$20M. $10M is not bargain basement for a 38 year old QB that is going on his 17th season and has never led a team to the playoffs. NOT ONCE. Even $5M is too much. Or did you think in year 18 he was suddenly going to become Joe Montana? Character and accuracy perhaps notwithstanding, the single most important aspect of a QB is consistency. People wowed by a few highlight plays are oblivious to the fact that teams Fitz "magic" leads rarely go far because he is wildly inconsistent. The $10M could have been better spent on younger players with upside, especially guys like Allen.

A Few Observations

0. Average first day early period of free agency. One bad signing, Fitz, one solid signing, Jackson. No absurd overpay deals or chasing huge money deals for WRs etc., which has to count as a win given franchise history.
1. We are paying Collins $16.9M, Fuller $13M, Jackson $14M. Jackson's annual average included since contract deals not available, first year number may be lower, but basically, $44M on 3 players in secondary, and probably closer to $48 when depth players counted, and possibly whoever we sign at FS. That is 25% of our cap. For that kind of money, you would expect one absolute superstar like Jalen Ramsey, and one of the most dominant secondaries in NFL. Especially with one of best DLs in NFL in front of it. Jesus was Collins signing horrible, he is almost certainly a goner after this year.
2. We are also spending $44M+ on OL this year, for which you would expect elite unit, ours is not. About $90M on OL and DBs, about half of cap, with a gaping hole still at FS and no long term LT. That leaves other half of cap for QB,WR,RB,TE,DL,LB,ST.
3. Wanna see how to build OL properly, look at Niners. Two stud Ts and a stud C. Don't like older players, but they at least understand the basics. Don't see any $20M guards on their roster.
4. Moves you would expect later part of FA. Signing someone at FS. Adding a WR. Adding a LB. We find three value signings those positions, has been a competent if not stellar FA.
5. Very interesting to think about a defense heavy draft. Not advocating it, but interesting to ponder. We drafted a FS, a CB, two LBs, with higher picks, our D would be scary good. Or FS,CB,LB, and perhaps one more modest big LB signing. Shallow draft for FS and S, so expect us to sign a FS, maybe draft long term answer next year? Or sleeper later? Moehrig at #19? As of now, you don't have to guess where teams will be attacking our D, middle of field underneath and 3+ WR sets to expose our FS, or deeeeeeeeep. With a true 1-high safety, this D could be unbelieveable.

Consistency with the running game would be nice. I hope with a bolstered WR corp, and another TE to go with Thomas, we may suddenly find it easier to find running lanes.

Time will tell, I suppose.

I completely agree. They both feed off each other. To me it appeared our run game was the weaker of the two as hard as that is to believe. Lol. And yes another TE would do wonders.

Re: WFT Free Agency

Love to see us sign TE like Everett for sane money. Huge money to guys like Henry a mistake, guy is Jordan Reed 2.0 with health issues, paying $10M for good but not great TEs or those with injury problems is dumb. Basically, as roster constructed now, if McLaurin or Thomas goes down, that's our season. One prudent TE and WR signing, and draft at positions, help a lot.

Yeah, getting Everett and allowing the offense to have competent TE in 12 personnel would open the playbook quite a bit with the run as well as the pass.

I’m still hoping T Moss can come in and contribute.

WR, TE, LB and FS still on the list for free agency.

Agreed. I think we would need to outbid a few other teams for Everett if we really want him. I know Bills and Jags are looking for a new TE.. There isn't much of options behind Everett in free agency, unless WFT believes they can find another gem like Thomas.
