Pocket$ $traight 07-14-2006, 11:57 PM Not sure I'd take Leftwich or Culpepper over Brunell. I'd probably take Hassleback over him though. Culpepper looked good when he had Moss. Not so goood w/o him. Leftwich is a good passer but still makes quite a few mistakes.
I couldn't leave this one alone...
You wouldn't take Byron Leftwich over Brunell? You would probably take Hasselback over him??? Let me guess, it is a tossup between Brunell and Peyton Manning.
The season needs to start soon. I am not even going to waste the energy on someone who makes statements like these.
GTripp0012 07-15-2006, 01:32 AM Ever since we got Brunell I always thought he was an average quarterback at best. Even after this past season due to most of his touchdowns coming from dink and dunk passes to cooley and sellers. But according to this ESPN.com article by KC Joyner, Brunell is tied with Matt Hasselback as the 4th most accurate passer in the league. He has an explanation for what's an accurate pass if you can read it, but to sum it up, it's an intended pass to the reciever where the reciever can get his hands on the ball.
But after reading this article I'm starting to think maybe Brunell is possibly the answer to the playoffs by ranking 4 spots higher than Payton Manning. So now im thinking maybe it would be better if campbell doesn't play again all year and let Brunell take us as far as he can.I haven't read much by KC Joyner, but he seems to be able to break down football using stats really well. It's tough to translate sabremetrics to football, but if you can do so it's really helpful to look at since the game is in general so hard to figure out.
Brunell is a very accurate passer and has been his whole career. I think a lot of fans think he is close to the end in terms of what he has left physically. He's near the end of the line, but only because he will retire within the next 2 years. Most quarterbacks can play past 40 with no significant physical dropoff. I do think Brunell is starting to lose the desire to play, and has been contemplating retirement. As long as the Skins are winning, his drive and desire will not be an issue. If they are losing, it's time to move on anyway. But physically he can still run relatively well, and pass very, very well.
Forget 2004. It's over and done and there was obviously a reason that MB couldn't get anything on his passes.
I still can't believe the Jags let him go as early as they did.

Here are some guys I think could QB the 2006 Redskins better than Brunell:
Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
Carson Palmer
Ben Roethlisberger
Matt Hasselbeck
Marc Bulger
Other guys that could QB this team about as well as Brunell:
Trent Green
Brad Johnson
Jake Delhomme
Eli Manning
Kurt Warner
Steve McNair
There's going to be a dropoff after that. Guys who didnt make this list could be bad game managers, or products of system or whatever. Doesn't mean I think poorly of them as QBs. Just wouldn't want to see them on the Skins.
MightyJoeGibbs 07-15-2006, 01:48 AM Leftwich isnt worthy of being compared to Brunell. He cant even fill his shoes. Hes a shoe sniffer. Byron may not even play long enough to surpass Brunells Jax records.
GTripp0012 07-15-2006, 01:57 AM One last point with the injuries. We have no idea how bad Brunell was hurt in 2004 or at the end of last year. I personally believe it was real serious, and that he tried to tough it out. I don't think it's the kind of thing that will happen again easily. MB may get dinged up a bit this year, but to affect his performance like it did last year, I just can't help but think it was probably far more serious of a knee injury than disclosed. Bruised kneecap or maybe a sprained ligament or something.

6. Mark Brunell, quarterback, Redskins
In the first half of the 2005 season, the Redskins lefty was among the NFL's more efficient quarterbacks. In the second half of the season, he was an eye sore. Brunell's play down the stretch was rather abysmal.
And the oft-injured quarterback missed a portion of mini-camp in 2006 after fracturing a finger on his throwing hand.
Washington is loaded with offensive talent after adding Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El to Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley, and a sturdy starting five on the offensive line. And the most significant pickup Washington made this off-season was bringing Al Saunders on board to calls plays.
If Brunell can execute the Saunders playbook, the Redskins are a Super Bowl threat. If he can't keep himself on the field, they aren't a playoff team. (For the record, I love Jason Campbell's upside, but he might have to go through some growing pains if forced to play).
That Guy 07-15-2006, 04:20 AM brunell is slightly above average. when he's healthy he can throw deep well (even though his arm isn't amazing), and we got a guy that's pretty good at catching deep too, so...
dmek25 07-15-2006, 06:18 AM who the hell would take leftwich over brunell. has been injured at college, and still hasnt played a season without getting hurt. i wouldnt take rothlesberger, either. i think a good young quarterback that is a product of a system. the steelers will be interesting this year without the bus. who is going to run the ball, duce? thats funny just thinking about it

Glad your so energy efficient! The word "probably" can be a confusing one indeed. I don't see a huge gap between the performance of Brunell versus Hassleback, especially last year. Mark had very comparable stats (www.nfl.com is decent resource) even though he had a tougher strength of schedule, an injury, a ProBowl caliber lineman that went down with injury and only one wideout option. Matt had ...um...errr...well none of these problems. Having said all that, I still would probably take Matt over Mark just like I would probably wear a jacket outside when it's particularly cold.

I gotta hit you for this one, because I am the type that wastes energy on someone who makes statements like the one you just made.
What is so great about Byron Leftwich at this stage of his career? Maybe you were suggesting that we're better off with Byron Leftwich for the long haul than we are with Mark Brunell, and that I could understand. But I have no idea why that kind of thinking even enters the equation when our QB of the future is already sitting on our bench.
Look at last year's performance:
They both had completion % of 57%.
Brunell's QB rating was 86, Leftwich's was 89, about the same.
Brunell fumbled 10 times in 16 games, Leftwich fumbled 8 times in 11 games.
Interception/TD ratio was similar, Brunell was 23/10 and Leftwich was 15/5.
Their performance seems the same to me. And don't forget, Leftwich is coming off a broken ankle. It will likely be fine, but wouldn't you rather have Randy Thomas coming into this season without having to recover from a broken leg? I'd take Brunell for this season. He's not coming off major injury, he's got more experience, and he produces just like Leftwich.
I just don't get how you can suggest that you'd take Leftwich in a heartbeat over Brunell. The only way it makes sense is if you're taking him for the long haul.
