ArtMonkDrillz 10-06-2006, 03:10 PM Did you guys read that the other teams coach is bitching about this now. He's saying that they should have pulled this kid when the game got out of reach and that they were just running up the score. Pursuit of Record Brings Sportsmanship Into Question - washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/05/AR2006100501978.html) That's a bunch of BS if you ask me. It's football, if they had wanted to stop him they should have stepped it up. It's not like the kid is 6'3'' 250lbs of pure beef. In fact, he doesn't look all that big from his picture. EDIT - It was in the article. The kid's not that big but he's strong as hell. At 5 feet 8 and about 160 pounds, McCoy could squat 500 pounds and bench 350. The coach knew the kid had a chance to break a very impressive national record so he went for it, deal with it! If the record had only been, say, 500yrds the coach would have probably sat him after he broke it, IMO. But it was all the way up at 700+ so they tried to get to it. Plus, I don't know if this kid wants to try to get a college scholarship, but those don't come easily, so you have to get your name out there. The other coach needs to use this as ammo to get his team fired up. When are people going to stop babying them? mike340 10-06-2006, 08:09 PM I agree, if the guy is 5'8" they have to do all they can because even if he gets 2,000 yards in a game, he won't get a college scholarship because they'll say he's too small to play. But I was thinking, their kicker seems pretty bad. Maybe they kept this RB in to give their kicker practice. (10 TDs, 64 points.) Some interesting tidbits: 1) This running back's coach is a teacher at the losing school. (See The games coaches play (http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/high-schools/2006/10/05/ddn100606billing.html)) 2) This game came shortly after they were made to forfeit 2 games for an ineligible player (who it looks like was reinstated now.) (See USATODAY.com - W.Va. prep RB McCoy rushes for 658 yards, 10 touchdowns (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/football/2006-09-30-matewan-mccoy_x.htm?csp=34)) So I can understand the "scr*w the league" mentality. Besides, who remembers if the guy who holds the national record did so in a blow-out? Besides, who remembers if the guy who holds the national record did so in a blow-out? That's what they told Barry Sanders. :) Yep, the kicker stank, they should've just gone for 2 every time, unless this was a way to get more practice in for him since he obviously needs it. 1) I wonder what was said to him on Monday back at the teachers' lounge! :D 2) Records are records no matter who the opponent is. We heard the crap arguments about Brunell's record against the Texans. Hey, it's still a record. I have no problem with them going for the record once it looked like he was on pace for it. He should keep trying since he got so close. Daseal 10-10-2006, 02:10 PM To me, a lot of this comes down to if this kid has a scholarship yet. It's not like he got a ridiculous amount of carries for the yardage, and most of his runs he just broke them for huge gains. Part of the role of a high school coach is to get your players and school on the radar of Universities. This coach did just that. Im sure getting beat like that hurts, but it's part of the game to lose. That Guy 10-10-2006, 05:01 PM i personally don't think it's a big deal. either stop him or deal with it. | |
