Aren't Deon Grant and Ken Hamlin "in the box" safeties?

On a related note, I wonder whether agents are going to be reluctant to sign contracts early because there is so much uncertainty as to how much players' salaries should increase (sorta like the draft)?

I'm of the belief that we can afford anything we want. Contracts can be very creative.
As far as lowballing Smoot and Pierce,, Pierce only had one yr of starting under his belt and demanded too much. Smart move on the Fo's part, course, hindsight is always 20/20.
Smoot went to Minnesota and promptly proved why he wasn't worth what he got, and we did the right thing in that case. I don't think that Smoot can cover any team's number one receiver.
i say let him keep walking.

And thank you Lady Brave. My usual haunts (no names mentioned) are getting way too crowded, and it's getting impossible to have any sort of intelligent discussion about Redskins football.
Glad to be here.

Nice post. But I WANT MY NAME BACK!!! I say sign Smoot to a cap-friendly, short term deal. Sign Robaire Smith and Fletch as well. Trade the #6 and a conditional 2008 to Houston for the #8 and #39. Draft DE Anderson/Adams (one of them should be there) and CB Houston/Wilson. And keep Dockery, but at most give him a $12 million signing bonus and that's being generous

oh and Russ Grimm for the Hall of Fame ;)

That would be an excellent offseason as it would address every position of need (LG, DT, DE, MLB, and CB) and add both youth and leadership to the defense.

Financially can we do it you think? That's one thing I didn't look that deep into

We did low ball Pierce, I forgot that Smoots deal was front loaded. Pierce was Low balled and many sports writers in this area said so. Honestly, I dont think we did offer anything to Clark, you definately could be right about that one.

With that said I would love to see us pick up Ken Hamlin, Dewayne White and Fred Smoot. We need to re-sign Dock, I just dont see how we can let him walk like this, it really kills me.

Actually no. In the end Smoot got offered a contract worth slightly less than the one he signed in Minny because they didn't want to pay him more than Springs and Pierce got an offer totaling exactly the same as the Giants offer. Our was simply backloaded. We did initially offer much less for Pierce but as others have said he had one good year at that point. In retrospect obviously it was a mistake to let him get away but we didn't low ball him and the decision at the time seemed to make sense.

I think this would lay out as a serious impact off season without even the hint of the usual Redskins craziness. If we can pull something close to this off I'd be impressed.
