I forgot to put the sarcasm smiley at the end of my post.

...and what will happen if they re-sign the player with the best punt return average (~35) in the NFL this year? (James Thrash.) (He didn't make it onto some lists, but he did on others.)

2 quick questions.. Where does Brunell fit into all of this?

Also, you may not be able to answer but maybe someone can, what kind of tax ramifications do players face when doing this type of restructure? I'd think that going from a large salary to a large bonus would hurt them tax wise since bonuses are taxed at a much higher rate than salary.

Brunell is a free agent, his contract is voiding. The team has no intentions to resign him.

Right now, Cartwright is a free agent, thus resigning him would be a hit to our cap figures. Signing him would move us further into the red.

Right now, the 51st man on our team counts $370K against the cap. For simplicity's sake, let's say we resign Rock for a one year deal worth $1.0 million. His signing would bump the 51st man out of the top 51, reducing our cap by $370K. He would then be added at $1.0 million. So the net effect of signing him, in this example, would be a hit of $630K.

Obviously if he signs with us for more money than that, the hit would be worse.

Rumors from JLC on his blog have indicated that the Skins may let him walk. Provided that they have a decent fallback option for kick returning and special teams, this could be a decent move. Our 3rd RB doesn't see the field often, so seeing him leave from a RB standpoint is really no big deal. But the staff will need to be cognizant of replacing his special teams leadership if they decide to let him go.Do you agree with this move?

Certainly, the Skins can use the extra cap dollars right now as this will likely be used to release Lloyd with, but the trade off is $1 million more guarenteed to Jansen in each of the next 3 seasons (on top of the 2.25 million we were already giving him), and at least one more year of not being able to get away from him.

I guess were were going to handcuff ourselves somewhere, but I'm not sure that this was the right contract to do it with.

Can someone explain this better, that understands it. The way I understand it is Jansen just got several million dollars guarenteed, that will be spread out over the remaining life of his contract. Making his cap number huge next year and the subsequent years. Is that correct or did he say, my play has not been that great and I was injured, so for the good of the team I will give up millions?

You're asking about a paycut in the bolded piece. To my knowledge, he did not take a paycut.

By my math, this restructure should have increased his 2009 cap figure by about $1.0 million or so.

Yeah I agree with it, primarily because I still think Jansen is a stud. People are quick to rag on him, but I don't see the logic.

I think we can expect Portis, Betts, and Samuels soon, and we'll be working with 6 million dollars under in free agency.

Yeah I agree with it, primarily because I still think Jansen is a stud. People are quick to rag on him, but I don't see the logic. Can he be a stud two years from now, when we are guarenteeing him almost 3.5 million plus a 6 million base salary?

Maybe, but he's going to have to stay on the field andhealthy.
