Favre has decided to call it a career

He's been talking about retiring for years now, it's not like this is out of the blue. As far as I know the Packers were never in any sort of serious discussions with Randy Moss, so it's not like Favre thought they had a chance of getting him and he was just hanging on until a decision was made.

Why does there always have to be some some of underlying story with some people??
Well it sounds from Brett's sources that he was ticked that GB did not make any moves in FA to help the team so he decided to retire. It also sounds like Brett left them a mesage that he was retiring and if you noticed he was not present when his retirement was announced like in most cases when a big star retires from the NFL.

Well, it's not like this has not being reported all over the place. Several news sources made that comment about the correlation between Moss signing and Favre retiring.
ESPN reported that the Eagles and Packers were "involved" in signing Moss, but the Packers were not as vocal as the Eagles were. In the end, Moss took a deal worth less than what the Packers offered although no numbers were ever released. So it's not a stretch for people to think Favre left due to inactivity in the FA market. He almost retired last year for that exact reason.
I personally feel that it was indeed a part of his decision, albeit small part. Over the years, they never took his opinion to heart and they weren't really players in the FA market like he wished. He wanted the team to stack the deck, and they didn't. Quite frankly, you can't blame the team for that either. They have good WR's, and most of them are very young. In the end, you can't tell me he still would have retired had Moss been signed, that could have rejuvenated him, but the wear and tear and mental exhaustion was just too much to return with the exact same team. Sure not getting Moss was a part or his decision, but it wasn't like he was pissed at the team and said since you didn't get Moss, I'm outta here like some suggest. He was just done.

okay Madden you think he left because? He only lobby for Moss last week and now that he signed with NE he retired the next day. Why we he ask for Moss one week and retire the next when he didn't get him?

I think he left because he played for 17 years and had the chance to go out on a winning season, having gotten his team to the NFC Championship game. Like Matty said, his retirement has been an issue for what, 3 years now? I sincerely doubt that anyone with half a brain in their head makes the decision to end their hall of fame career based upon the location of one Randy Moss. As many have already said, the packers are already much better than average in the receiver dept. This is just fodder for sports talk and columnists who don't have anything of substance to report.

When you look at his career, what else did he have to prove? I think in his mind he proved all of his doubters of the last 2-3 years wrong, he got his team to the NFC Championship, he had one hell of a season, and he's just mentally spent. All of the conspiracy theories are fun to talk about, but in the end the most logical reasons for his decision makes the most sense.

Just a made up question:

Would you still feel the same about Farve if some how he came back and played for another team next year or would you feel he stabbed the team in the back?

I can't speak for all the Packer fans but FOR ME well first of all I can't even picture him in a different uniform (except the Falcons of course) but anyways if he did go to another team I would deffinately feel the same way. It couldn't take anything away from all those other moments I had watching him while I was growing up but honestly since the first day I watched football I was a little more of a "Favre fan" than a "Packer fan". I love the Packers now and all but the way he played is really the reason I loved watching the Packers since i was 9 years old. I dont think he would be stabbing the team in the back excatly and I would keep watching him but I really really doubt he'd come back for another team so hopefully i don't have to see it lol.

The Packers should be on the phone with Mark Brunell's agent right now. He'd be a good backup/mentor for Rodgers. Plus it'd be kind of cool for him to go full circle and finish things back where he started.

The Packers this week talked to Brunell’s agent, Bruce Tollner, and expressed at least some interest in a player the Packers brought into the NFL in the fifth round of the 1993 draft. Brunell has 150 starts in his career with Jacksonville and Washington, including nine starts as recently as 2006. But his skills have diminished to where he’s strictly a backup after spending last season as the Redskins’ No. 3 quarterback. They voided his contract in February to get under the 2008 salary cap.

Tollner said Brunell wants to play this year and has three other teams that have called and, like the Packers, are sorting out their priorities for their backup spots.

“The ideal role (for Brunell) is to mentor or be there supporting the No. 1 guy and having the ability to step in and win games,” Tollner said. “That fits with a few different teams right now that I’m communicating with, and I think it makes a lot of sense at (the Packers).”

Ok want to hear a crazier theory. Our boy Bram said that he(and Larry :doh:) said there is something fishy going on because farve wasnt at the press conference with the Pack. They said it is ridiculous for a big name hof player like farve not to be with the team. Something sour along the lines of not getting Moss, not paying him(farve) enough, or even the front office wanted to get rid of farve to move on but they dont want the PR nightmare so they made him feel unwanted therefore forcing him to retire...lol
