ya know what impresses me about this Springs awol issue?

Phillip Daniels....man that dude is positive...that guy is talkin like a coach.
Check out the Redskins TV link on him on redskins.com.

Man, this guy impresses me.
My respect for Daniels has just gone up...great guy....solid player too.
Maybe now with Erasmus potentially doing 3rd and long spot duty, guys will get off his back.

Phillip Daniels is a 100% team leader. This guy leads by example, you have to love that, no doubt and I look for him to have a solid season. He is still training/working his butt off and in great shape after 13 or so years in this league.

I'm glad the plane arrived with LL, I like that he showed up for OTA's I think he will learn. He's just a young kid, we all witnessed Sean go through the growing pains his first couple of years in the NFL.

I'm not so sure when the plane with Shawn pulls into DC, but I know his teammates and coaching staff want him there. It would be nice to see him show this year with all the changes to staff and such. And after hearing players and coach's speak on the issue they are putting it out there for him to be in DC, that he is missing new stuff. After thinking about it I hope as a good teammate he leaves Arizona or wherever he might be and just shows good faith and participates in these OTA's.

Springs gets a pass in my book, he had a tough time last season with his dad and all, and still played great football.

Here's a bit of an update from JLC:

Post-Practice Notes - Redskins Insider (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2008/06/postpractice_notes.html)

I'm not disagreeing with or doubting Landry but this is like the 3rd or 4th time that he's said he's skipped something because of a "family issue". How many family issues does this guy have?

The Santana stuff is funny

No kidding. Hangover.com. So funny. At least he showed up. He was so damn hungover he was puking all over Ashburn, but hell, he was there.

Springs is a long time vet and has proven his workouts in Arizona get him sufficiently ready for the season. I'm sure they'd rather he be in Ashburn than Arizona, but he's not nearly the concern that Landry is. If the entire team can show up but Landry can't, that says something about the man.

Or you could argue that his workouts in Arizona are not getting him "sufficiently" ready for the season, which could be contributing to his oft-injured status.

I have to agree with Matty here though. If you want them to be there, make it mandatory. If it's not mandatory, then they aren't violating any rules...maybe they are not getting any extra points with players/coaches/fans, but then they aren't playing for points are they...$$$

Because of the CBA with the NFLPA, I don't believe the team can make non-mandatory activities "mandatory".

Not worried about Landry. Here's what bugs me though: "Zorn said thus far he has been unable to reach corner Shawn Springs, who has not reported for this session of OTAs. Springs has been working out in Arizona and has told associates that his plan was to show up for the start of training camp but not voluntary workouts."

Springs is our # 1 CB and him not being there hurts team chemistry, he's missing important info Blache is putting in now, and he's not there to help mentor the young DBs. Very selfish. Springs' Dad was a player so he's been around the NFL his whole life, he's probably a bit jaded and is putting himself before the team. His cap number is about $ 7.4M, next year it rises to $ 8.4M. Between the cap number, his injuries, and age I wouldn't expect him in a Redskins uniform next year, so he really doesn't give a crap about non-mandatory stuff IMO. His situation and Rogers' injury are the reasons I was hoping for one of the top CBs in the draft if we couldn't get Merling. Hopefully we can grab a June 1 cut for some more depth.

I think Phillip Daniels made a good point in saying that Springs still has his situation with his father going on.

"I don't know if something's wrong," Daniels said. "I know he's going through a lot with his family, too. So I don't want to knock him too much until [I] get the full story, but I would love for him to be here."

I haven't seen any updates on Ron Springs' status. The latest I understood was that he was in a coma after a routine medical procedure and that the family was suing the hospital. I hope by a miracle he recovers from his coma and his condition hasn't worsened.

If Springs is dealing with family issues, obviously family comes first, but there is no reason he couldn't contact Zorn or someone else at Redskins Park.

I agree with Daniels as well.

Springs's absence drew strong comments from Phillip Daniels on Tuesday.
"As a veteran, I would expect him to be here," Daniels said. "We need him to be a leader of that [cornerbacks] group back there. He's the oldest, so you have to show that leadership. The young guys in the secondary, they need that. "There might be a reason he's not here--I'm not sure. But at the same time, if there's no reason...It's my 13th year and I'm here. Be here. Be a leader. That's how it is."
