Practiced some with the pitching wedge this morning. Started off poorly, failing to get it past about 80-90 yards but then I settled in and was able to start consistently hitting it about 115 yards with pretty good loft...but more often than not it would hook to the right, couldn't keep it straight
It's probably obvious, but this is basically caused by an open club face when you strike the ball (if you're right handed).
This can be corrected a couple ways:
1.) Try to setup with your club face slightly closed
2.) Don't rotate your forearms/wrists during the swing (i.e.: don't open the club face during your swing)
3.) Rotating your hips through the ball during your swing will make it harder to swing open-face (your pelvis should be pointing to where you want to shoot just before the club strikes the ball -- back swing, forward swing while rotating hips, hips face forward just before club strikes the ball).
Of course, I'm no pro and others might have some better advice.

I have said it several times in this thread thats why you need to take leasons and have a pro watch your swing so they can show and tell you what your doing wrong. After several leasons you will start to learn why you have a hook. Most of the time its because you bring the club to the inside on the back swing and then out and in on the down swing. If you practice and learn a bad swing then its much tougher to correct the problem latter on. When I got back into golf I could still hit the ball good but was very inconsistant but I chalked that up to practice. I did get better but still was in the high 80's to low 90's. I finally took some leasons and he changed several things in my stance and swing. Things at first got worse then I started getting the feel for the changes. I finally got back to high 80's and now I'm in the low 80's after about every round. What he changed made my swing more consistant and I hardly ever duff a shot. Yes I hit some to the right or left but hardly duff. I still take 5 leasons a year just to get him watching my swing. He will also once a year for one of my leasons go out and play 18 holes to see how I hit the ball when out on the course. Not sure how many pros will do that but that has really helped me alot.

If your down for a week this storm should only affect you for maybe two days if that. You should see some nice waves but other then a few stray showers the weather should not be that bad. I have seen a hurrican hit at night and the next day was a clear as could be. I actually got on CNN durn that hurican back in the 90's in Nags Head.

The only thing Bill will do is give you some stellar waves, pretty choppy Saturday, nice and glassy on Sunday. And the fact that he's weakening is a plus...

Did I read that right and they are calling for double over head on Sunday? Wow, thats some nice waves and to think my board is down at my parents cottage and I'm not able to get my hands on it this weekend. Do you surf BDBohnzie? I do but not near as much as I use to and I would not go out in anything that big now. Back when I was in my 20's we lived for this stuff. I jsut got off the phone with my buddy who lives two house of the ocean in Va. Beach and the waves are starting to build.

Whats a good way to start learning golf? I was told by my new boss that if I ever want to work the day shift I better pick up golf.

I played yesterday and the heat index was 107 and it felt like 107. We had 4 tee times and started with 16 and by the 18th hole had only 13 still playing. Several guys had bad hamg overs and that pretty much did them in and the other guy started drinking beer before the first hole and was done in by the 12th. I think I drank 5 or 6 bottles of water and the heat did not bother me that much but I did not shoot very good.

Some would tell you to take lessons right away or you're screwed for life. But I've only recently started playing and the only "professional" advice I've gotten is tips from the guys on this site, a buddy of mine, and my father-in-law. The most important thing I've learned so far is how to grip the club and that's made a world of difference.
Now that I know how to grip the club I'm getting out to the driving range two or three times a week and getting the muscle memory down. And I'm having a blast. Next summer I might take lessons (time and money depending) because I want to get comfortable enough to actually play 9 or 18 holes. I could probably play some now, but I want to be better first. But up until now I haven't taken any official lessons but from the little I've learned I've learned enough to go out there and have a good time.
