You're right. Ultimately, the true test of a person's character is how they react to adversity, and how they overcome their mistakes. I guess cheating on my wife is just a mistake that I would never make. I'm not insinuating any of you guys would do that. There are just some things that are really hard to forgive.

As for a President's character, I want them to do the "right" thing. The morally right thing -- not the right thing for America. It may sound silly, but I'd much rather people base their decisions on morals rather than nationalism, security, etc. -- even if it meant trouble for the country. Unfortunately, that is not how government is designed to work.
That makes no sense at all. A president is elected to do the right things for Americia. Now if they have good sound morals then that should help them make good strong decisions but making the right choice for this country comes first and I don't think you have to throw morals out the window to do that.

So, you justify immoral actions based on the good of the country? Do you also justify immoral actions based on what's best for you? Machiavellianism at its worst... Sigh.

All I have to say is when my son says to me "Mom, I want to be president some day..".. my response is always "..then you better keep your nose clean.".. The majority of Americans expect our leaders to have a good moral compass, period. It's just the way it is, and I hope it continues to be that way for years and years to come.

While the offense is troublesome, it's the subsequent lying that's more odious. Don't lie to me. Don't be a f'ing weasel, be a man and tell the truth...that is expected of you as someone who represents others.

I guess I'm in the minority here, because I actually *do* care if a politician cheats on his wife. It is a sign of weak character, and if you're concerned with lobbyists influencing the government, then you better damn sure be concerned about a politician's character. To me, there is nothing more important about a person than their character -- be it a politician, trash collector, or otherwise.

I'm with you on this one Dog! If a politician is going to lie to his wife, what lies will he/she tell to the country?

I always live by this saying: You can't get gold from crap!

You need to re-read my post as I did not say one thing about not using morals when making decisions. Maybe I did not understand your post which I was responding to.
