Defensivley, this should be a total mismatch. Their offensive line is horrible, they will have a pretty bad quarterback at htis point playing. We should be able to put pressure and force them to make bad decisons.[/QUOTE]
You got that right......I bet it's breaking Jon Jansen's heart he can't play in this game and meet one of his favorite opponents....Michael Strahan......
hurrykaine 09-15-2004, 12:01 PM "I think we need to put up at most 17 points to win this game."
I think points will be at a premium in this game, not because we're going up against an elite defense like Tampa, but because it's going to be a rainy a$$ day on sunday. Even Spurrier would admit, "not a good day to pitch it around".
1. They better work on those botched center-qb exchanges cuz that ball will be slippery.
2. Agree with most, that just handing it off to Portis and short passes to Cooley+Coles will be the way to go on offense. Time of possession will be in our favor.
3. On defense, I expect to see more blizting - that's the best way to take Toomer and Hilliard out of the game.
4. As we've done since the first game this preseason, the D will continue to create 2 turnovers per game - what better chance of creating turnovers than to pound Warner and Barber.
5. ST Kick coverage units will definitely pick up their play once Gibbs and Danny Smith figure out the right line-up for the coverage unit.
Prediction: Morton takes one to the house in this game & Skins win 17-3.
As as aside, two extreme positives from the last game.
1. When Brunell got nailed by a hit last week, linemen were picking him up - something we never saw them do for Ramsey/Hasselback last year.
2. We got the ball back with 5:36 to play in the 4th Q, and we gave it back to TB with less than 20 seconds left - that's what you want to see - ball control and excellent clock management.
SUNRA 09-15-2004, 12:20 PM First, as stated before, we have to establish ball possession. The way to beat this team is to keep their offense on the bench. Tiki Barber can take it the distance and has had pretty good games against us in the past. (Before Gregg Williams of course).
Secondly, we should go for the Giants juggular with a balance of offensive plays that keeps them off balance. Brunell has to get enough reps in the air and get used to throwing into better secondary's in the future. I'd like to see Coles, Gardner, Thrash and McCants used a little more in deep passes. The Giants secondary is very suspect and we should score at will against it. This will not be a conservative game by no standards. I predict Redskins 35, Giants 7 : Portis 2TDs, Arrington 1TD, Coles 1TD, Cooley 1TD That's Whats up!
backrow 09-16-2004, 08:05 AM Same keys as last week, and for any week for that matter
1) Establish the run and control the clock
2) Stop the run
3) Win the turnover battle
Would also like to see some improvements in ST coverage and maybe a bit more efficiency from the passing game.
I like it! May I use this when I discuss with my buddies here at work?
redwagonskins 09-16-2004, 11:43 AM I think there is no better time for us to head to NY. The starting QB is pissed because he got benched and the coach didn't have to guts to tell him. The rookie QB, who told Warner he was benched, got absolutely rocked. The team is fighting with the coach. The weather is bad which hurts the deep ball (which I'm not convinced either of the gints QB's can throw right now anyway).
ON THE OTHER HAND. The SKins are buying into Gibbs and his sytem. Guys are working out on their off days. The o-line is feeling good about themselves and taking ANY hits on the QB personally. The defense is flying around the ball.
So here's what we need to do:
1. run, run, run
2. stretch the field with Laverneous and Thrash to open up the underneath routes for Colley, Rasbey, Gardner, Portis etc... and get Brunell is a groove.
3. blitz the crap out of them and try to get to warners fragile ego early.
4. not allow the deep ball to get us by having the FS double up on Tommer when he's more than 15yds down the field.
This could be a huge win, in NY, for the skins if they keep proressing from their first game.
illdefined 09-16-2004, 11:59 AM we really need to tee off in this game and come into the MNF game vs DallASS with monstrous momentum.
gotta really hone our offense, both ground and air. and we gotta see what teams will do when they know the blitz is coming and learn how to stop THAT too.
JWsleep 09-16-2004, 02:15 PM I expect to see more passing in this game. Yes, we must establish the run, but the gints will be keying on that, and thier secondary is WEAK. Look for more play action and trickery; also look for Cooley, Sellars, and even Rasby to get throws. I'm sure Gibbs wants to get Brunell going.
I bet we'll be more selective in our blitzing on Sunday. Toomer, Shockey, and Tiki are bigger threats than anything the bucs had. The bucs AVERAGED 4-yards per pass. YOu can blitz all day long against that. How bad can it possibly hurt you? I doubt we blitz on 70% of our plays again.
BIGREDSKINFAN63 09-16-2004, 05:31 PM i watched the nyg/pe game last week, and the gmen were able to get decent pressure on mcnabb, but they could not stop to at all.i would think that the skins would run portis and betts a lot and throw to cooley on the play action, coles as well.gibbs will not open up the playbook anymore than he has too,he will never tip his hand to parcels early.williams will blitz more than he did the bucs, count on it.warner is slower than johnson is,if the skins get ten sacks it wo'nt surprise me.i bet the punter does'nt rush down the field like he did last week.did you guys see that hit jeremiah trotter put on him?ole michael"mr ed"strahain's gonna see portis so much he's gonna have burgundy and gold nightmares.
AnonEmouse 09-17-2004, 03:16 PM Only thing I'd add is going back to an earlier post about the dink and dunk the Buccs used last week. They didn't make it work for 2 reasons 1) no deep threat (once Galloway went out) and no running threat.
The Giants do offer some of both of these, even if they aren't one of the best. They have a better running game than the Buccs and Toomer can get deep an often. We MUST tighten down on the coverage, but I suspect Williams will do this with some unusual coverage schemes married in with the blitz. We must also contain Barber. if we funnel them up the middle, we should stop them all game, but cannot let Barber to the outside with space. When not blitzing, Arrington and Washington will have to be on their game (something I don't doubt). Likewise Springs and Smoot must take away the 5-10 yards completely and discourage them from going deep - I agree with Taylor covering Shockey, but only if he's learned the lesson about angles from last week against Galloway.
Offense is simple - keep the running game going all day and make the passing game effective as an alternate to stop them keying on Portis. We don't need to go deep if we keep Portis moving, but we can't drop balls or underthrow like last week. The Giants don't have a great secondary, but we can't waste plays or risk INT's too often else we WILL get punished sooner rather than later.

The Giants do offer some of both of these
exactly. the heart of the Giants is weak, not its arms. the Giants have very legitmate weapons. Toomer, Hilliard, Shockey and Barber air or ground. they will gameplan to lob over into the holes Williams's blitzers leave.
this would be an ideal opportunity for the Dline themselves (and Griffin vs. his former team) to make a name for themselves and attack their weak core: the questionable Oline and Warner. leaving more of our defense to deal with all the potential playmakers. watch Williams not blitz as often, especially with our safeties, someone (Pierce vs. the run, Taylor/Bowen vs. the pass) has to stop the blood if Warner slips one past.
