you could always open a 3rd line at $10 a month or so, and then switch the phones. This works best if you have someone else who you are thinking about adding anyway, such as a child or parent.

thats actually pretty smart

Hey Matt,

I've upgraded blackberries 3x within the last 2 years. The first time the guy at Costco did it for me 6 months after I got a new phone in order to make a sale. He told me if I wanted to upgrade before I was eligible, to call ATT and just ask for the "retention department" aka "the save team" (I had the wrong phone number... just call customer svc and ask for the save team). Just tell them you really want an Iphone, but another carrier (be specific) is offering another phone for a ridiculous introductory price for new customers and it makes financial sense for you to pay the 200 dollar contract breaking price and get the other phone at this point. Ask them if they can help you make it make sense to stay with them.

And if there's one thing I've learned in negotiating, brutal honesty and a concerned tone will get you farther than demanding anything. Sound genuinely concerned but resolute. In other words, don't think of it as a negotiation, but problem solving in order to get to your goal.

Thanks for the advice EE but I think I have an easier route to go now. I'm just going to upgrade my 2nd line which is upgrade eligible. For some reason I didn't think to do that initially. But that is good advice for the future - thanks.

You'll need it for when after your wife plays with your phone.

I went to two "authorized dealers" this weekend only to find out not all dealers sell the iphone. I was told I would have to go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart, or an AT&T corporate store. Since then I've been reading that you can't just switch the sim cards. The phone will only work with the sim that the phone is activated with and the line that has the data plan for it. So now I can choose to do the $399 early upgrade or just wait until December when I'll be eligible for a discounted upgrade. Guess I'm just going to wait it out. Plus there's supposed to be a new model coming out this summer.

You might be able to use your wife's upgrade for your phone...

A buddy of mine lost his phone while we were snowboarding in the backcountry last year. His wife was eligible for upgrade, and since they're on the same contract, they were able to use that to get him a new phone.

So they let me use my 2nd line upgrade so I'm sporting a new 16gb iPhone today! Loving this thing already. I can tell it's going to be a serious addiction.
