I got sick with the flu when I was about 20, and couldn't even stand to be around cigarettes. When I recovered, I decided not to continue. That only lasted for 5 years, and I am smoking again. So, for me, getting sick really helped me quit.
Drew is right ... I was filling out an application for personal health insurance and of course it asked if I was a smoker. At the time I wasn't, but it said if you have smoked within the past 10 years, then you are classified as an "Ex-Smoker". So, the choices were: Smoker, Ex-Smoker and Non-Smoker.

Do any of your people have any desire to quit? Maybe a team effort would help as far as supporting each other.
I'll probably have to move away from them.

I know of a few people who used Chantix and have not picked a cigarette up since.
Chantix works. I stopped for about a 1 1/2 months using Chantix and when I went on a guys week golfing started back (yea I'm a dumb ass). I have some now and I'm going to quit after the football season. I really don't smoke much durn the week unless I'm drinking and my biggest hurddle is on the weekends when I enjoy a few adult drinks. Last time I quit I also quit drinking for a few weeks to help with the urge. I'm not one of those people who plan their life around smoking and most of the restaurants we go to are smoke free which does not bother me. I actually perfer going to a smoke free restaurant when going out for a nice dinner.

When I took Chantix the closes I came to committing suicide was while watching the Redskins play the Lions.

I smoked about a pack a day for 8 years. Thats was 12 years ago when I quit. IMO, quit cold turkey, don't get anything that makes you think it's going to be easier. If you think it's going to be easy you've lost. Pick a day in advance and go for it.
I substituted exercise. When you are exercising you most likely don't want to smoke.
You don't have to avoid bars, alcohol, etc b/c you are eventually going to be put in that situation at some point and you are going to have to say no. Might as well say no now. It's hard but after a few weeks everyday will get a little easier and easier. I'll never smoke again but still occasionally feel the urge. It's fleeting though.

I actually had a really bad reaction to that stuff. Not suicide attempt or anything crazy, but was very very nausea, couldnt sleep sometimes, and would have hypervelated breathing attacks...it was kinda scary and consulted a doctor. They said it wasnt anything physical and pointed to the Chantix. I had a friend in Florida have similar issue with Chantix as well.
Been trying to quit for a couple years and have really cut back. I may have a pack a month but I do compensate by smoking black and milds to get me through a weekend. I can go a couple days without smoking...but having a drink I find it impossible to not to smoke

I quit partying years ago and I quit drinking about two years ago. Smoking is my last bad habit.
