mooby 04-26-2010, 09:59 PM Extremely disappointing first round regardless of what happens in Game 7. It should never have gotten to 7 games
My thoughts exactly.
Looks like that old adage is true, a hot goalie is much better to have than an offensively gifted team in the playoffs.
I'm disappointed on so many levels. Even if we win on Wednesday this series has been extremely disappointing. We're atrocious on the power play, defense is leaving much to be desired, and they've got the hot goalie when it matters. No offense to Varly but it's just been a combination of circumstances that leads me to believe unless we do a complete 180 we won't be in this much longer.
Dirtbag59 04-26-2010, 10:00 PM Ironically this team might still be a year or two away. They need Varly and Neuvy to both develop as well get Carlson to become a true top line defender, not that he hasn't played like one this series but it's obvious that theres more to come. And finally what the hell is going on with Alzner? Hopefully he'll develop but I don't feel like he's going to make it at this point.

not really disapointing too me, more frustrating. the caps have just run into a very hot goalie. they had something like 54 shots on goal tonight, a playoff record, but they only got one into the back of the net.
if the caps can pull out a win in game seven then it's on to the next series. it doesn't have to be pretty, they just need to win.
if the caps can win the cup, no one will even remember this series.

That's the problem. We don't win games like this. In a game where 10-12 total goals are scored, I'll take the Caps 8 days a week. In those 3-2, 2-1 type of games, we're toast. We don't defend and goaltend well enough, we stink on the PP, and we commit stupid penalties. We simply don't do the things you need to do to win in the playoffs.
I've thrown my expectations out the window. I think Theo should probably start game 7, but shit, at this point who knows? We're so inconsistent. I'm so effing annoyed right now. We're facing a smoking hot netminder right now. We're in trouble.

I pretty much came in to say the same exact thing.
mredskins 04-27-2010, 08:03 AM Lets go Bruins!!!!!
JLW428 04-27-2010, 09:27 AM How can you leave Mike Green of the sucks list? Seriously though, I wouldn't count us out yet. Halak is playing out of his mind...it's not that we suck.
Its easy to have 53 saves when you know exactly what is coming at you. They haven't been setting up any screens, or stating any type of ground infront of the net. During the 5 on 3 we had 2 shots - TWO SHOTS!. Backstrom sat in the corner waiting for something to open up for about 30 seconds - nothing opened up...
In order to win game 7 (which I don't think we deserve to win) we need:
(1) Start Theo. Varly had 2 good games in Montreal, and that was it. Now he's back to the old Varly who can make some spectacular saves, but he lets in the easy ones. Theo is our guy for game 7 - no question about it.
(2) Dominate the crease and take screen shots. Obviously the fancy stuff isn't going to work. Montreal has our number on that stuff, so we need to try something different.
(3) Make Mike Green learn how to play his position, or move him up to forward. When he skates around the ice like some sort of "saftey" he kills us. I saw on multiple 5 on 5 situations where Ovechkin had to drop back and play D because Green was pinching in too much. That is unacceptable. Ovechkin should never have to drop back to play D during a 5 on 5.
The list can go on, but I need to get back to work...

i agree with everything you said, particularly the part where havlat has had a clear view of most of the caps shots last night, wen he didnt he made great saves.
the part i dont agree with is the comment that ovie shouldnt have to back check on 5 on 5. in playoff hockey, all 5 skaters must back check and mark their man. if ovies guy is past the blue line, ovies butt better be past the blueline.
i would also start theo, i wouldnt have switched goalies half way thru game 1 either but thats bruce's call and hes been making pretty good ones so far.
id just like to welcome all the new (i wont call ya bandwagon) caps fans they have gained over the past few years, playoff hockey actually kinda sorta looks like how hockey is supposed to look. you know, pre-1998 rule changes to compliment the russian speedsters like pavel bure, teammu selanne and make hockey more exciting for americans.
you crash the net, you back check your ass off and dont take stupid penalties.

Yeah, when Ovie's man is past the blueline, he should be back checking. But, when the puck is in the zone still and Green is pinching in - Ovie shouldn't have to fill that blue line position.
I know what you mean about the bandwagon fans. I've been playing hockey for close to 17 years. I played for UMD, and grew up in Frederick playing for the Phantoms turned Fury. It's tough to see all of these people who act like they've been caps fans and have followed the team forever. But, hey - at least they can't say our fanbase is weak anymore...haha.
Its bound to happen when a team gets good...you know?
