Ghettodog don't worry we would look out for you because I think you would need some help.LOL Gas is transportation (land and sea), electricity from generator (powers all hand tools and more), gas would become the life blood and the new currency. All those tools you named are great but while your splitting wood by hand I have my chain saw running through the stuff like butter. Then if I'm real lucky I know some with a log splitter and we can have enough wood for the winter in a days work. You would still be on you second log with an axe. I would use my small john boat (does not burn much gas) to get around the river to fish, hunt and crab. Im moving in with firstdown , maybe hire TTL as a bodyguard .

Your chainsaw will probably not work because it depends on electronic circuit boards. Your log splitter might work if it only runs off propane or compressed air, but then log splitters are overrated and a maul is more than enough for any splitting job. And if your splitter breaks? Well, you can use my maul.

Your john boat would still float, but I'm guessing the engine would not work since it also probably has electronics. But you're the guy who thinks all his gas powered stuff will work, so you probably won't have any oars. And if your engine fails? Oh, just take it to the shop for repair!

The point most overlooked is simplicity. In this type of event you would want items that are durable, and can be repaired in the field. Chainsaws and boat motors don't fall into this category.

The author was talking about a storm that caused a surge and blew out the electric grid. There is not going to be an event, short of nuclear war, that causes an EMP the size necessary to blow out personal electronics. If we went back to the stone age, certainly a lot of people would die and more would turn to savagery to survive. Just ain't happening in this decade (again barring some man made holocaust like nuclear war)

While I think it is very unlikely, it does seem possible that solar events could affect simple electronics on the surface of the earth (i.e.: integrated circuit boards):

A few high-energy nuclear particles and ions (energy levels greater than 500 MeV) within an SPE can travel all the way down to the planet’s surface. This can produce equipment damage similar to the damage observed on spacecraft. The area most vulnerable are the regions of magnetic pole reversals, such as the South Atlantic Anomaly.

In any case, this is a very thorough article about solar events and the threat they pose to humans.

No, but if the s**t goes down I'll need people familiar with hard work to get things going again. IE water purification, food production, distribution, sanitation, security, civics, heath, etc. You know, all the things that people used to know how to do for themselves.

Cool ! Actually , I know someone who has worked as a bodyguard . Im sure you would have enough amunition and firepower that we would survive . Since you won't take my $$$, I guess I could give you one < or more > of my cousins ... cute young ladies . I have the security part covered , ATF agent and a few friends who work security for the State Deptartment .

Well damn! Do we have to wait until the solar storm? I just sighted in my .308 this weekend.

Check these guys out.
