Decent as who, Merriman? lol. RockyMac? It doesn't matter, he's not a Pro Bowler without those roids.
Merriman has a busted knee that he never recovered from, it happens to tons of players (i.e. Lavaar). Rocky is def a solid starter, so yea at least as good as rocky. And I wouldn't count him out as still being great. He's looked pretty good so far this year.

If your as good as he was on roids, he's gotta at least be decent off them.
They said the same thing about Shawne Merriman. And once he was off roids, he had that one good season in '07 then he fell completely off the wagon. Part of that is injury but I mean when you go from having 35+ sacks in 3 seasons to being completely destroyed from injuries and your team is planning on releasing you as soon as you get healthy that's a major fall, and most people don't think it's just coincidence after he got busted with that steroids test that he was never the same. And most people don't know this but the NFL doesn't suspend until you've had at least 2 positive tests. The first is a warning but the second is a minimum 4 game suspension.

speaking specifically on this year, they wouldnt be with Ryans out now... he's a HUGE part of what they try to do on defense.
i like Schaub a lot, but i dont see him doing anything special in the post-season.
with time, chemistry, and a draft or two they will be scary. like you said they are at a good average age and all they have left as far as needs go is to draft DB's. maybe a few upgrades here and there but they definately have a lot of potential.
they're like the OKC Thunder of the NFL.

Speaking of the almost best teams in the 2010 NFL:
Proof that the 2010 Chargers are insane | ProFootballTalk.com (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/22/proof-that-the-2010-chargers-are-insane/)
The Chargers are ranked first in offense (yards), first in defense, and yet they are 2-4.
This, clearly, is insane. Not posting UFL scores at 5 AM insane (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/22/culpeppers-late-scramble-delivers-victory-for-mountain-lions/), but close.
In a article for the Wall St. Journal Friday, MDS puts the whole thing in perspective (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304023804575566353108924636.html?m od=WSJ_LifeStyle_Sports_RightTopCarousel_1). It's even more rare and odder than you'd imagine. Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, there have been only eight teams that ranked first in offense and defense at the same time during any point of the season, for a total of 18 weeks of action.
The combined record of those eight teams at the time they were ranked first in offense and defense: 62-7. I'm not sure what this all means exactly, other than San Diego's special teams coach is lucky to still have a job.
