SBXVII 05-01-2011, 08:24 PM I just don't see Neild as a NT, at least a good one. He's a Golston clone which isn't all bad.
Everyone says he's a work horse, down and dirty scrumber. Which is what a NT needs to be. The concern brought up is that he's only 300lbs and most NT's are 330+. But I think I heard the announcers commenting after the draft that Pittsburg and a few other teams use smaller NT's and they are used effectively.
Remember our defense is molded after Pittsburg's 3-4 defense. So although I too would like to have seen the team pick up a big NT, I'll reserve judgement until I see how the defense does with the new players added to the team. I think it will be interesting to see how Haslett uses his new toys.
SBXVII 05-01-2011, 08:30 PM Jamie Dukes of NFLN says that we are now in play for Luck in next year's draft. I'm beginning to dislike that guy.
Really? and the 49ers are not? I honestly think he chose not to come out this yr because he knew he would not be picked up by his ole ball coach. So he chose to stay in college another yr vs. getting stuck with a screwed up team, ie; Panthers, or Bills.
I'm betting the 49ers throw a ton at whoever is 1st in the draft in order to get him next yr. So I'd pretty much look at the rest of the QB's coming out and pick one of them. Not to mention Luck might not have a good yr considering the school will have a new HC and probably a new scheme.

He weighed in at 319 during the combine. The reason he might not "look" like a classic Nose tackle body comp wise is due to the fact that he's much more muscular then...well most interior D-Line prospects in general. So at worst his potential to add 10 pounds of good weight might be limited. I don't think he'll be a pro bowler, but I do feel he'll be a starter in this league.

What I meant was Dukes is convinced the Skins will earn the first overall pick in the 2012 draft due to our recent draft.

The 49ers used a high 2nd round pick to draft Colin Kaepernick. Unless he totally flops as an NFL prospect in just one season, I'd be pretty stunned if they gave up a ton to get up to #1 overall.
GMScud 05-01-2011, 08:47 PM For those of you who don't have ESPN insider, here's Todd McShay's take on our draft:
Washington Redskins (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/teams/_/team/was/year/2011)
Best move: Trading back from No. 10 to 16
The Redskins used the 16th pick acquired from Jacksonville on DE Ryan Kerrigan (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/_/id/27017/ryan-kerrigan), who will never be elite but is the kind of quality player and character guy the organization needs. It was a patient move and sent the right message. You could argue Washington had more holes than any other team heading into the draft, and getting WR Leonard Hankerson (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/_/id/27045/leonard-hankerson) with the 49th pick (also acquired in the deal) got the Redskins a player who could easily be a starter for them.
Most questionable move: Dejon Gomes (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/_/id/26163/dejon-gomes) in the fifth round
Washington could have gotten a better safety at that point, someone like Ahmad Black (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/_/id/27262/ahmad-black). Or how about bringing in a developmental quarterback like T.J. Yates (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/_/id/27302/tj-yates)?

Not only that, but muscle is also more dense than fat. So, if a slab of muscle and a slab of fat of the exact same size as the muscle slab are weighed, the slab of muscle would have a heavier weight. Dude must be RIPPED.

LOL I just posted the same thing in another thread..
Funny how NFLN said they think the redskins will finish with the worst record
Son Of Man 05-01-2011, 08:49 PM All in all I think that htis draft should serve as proof that our FO understands where we are as a team, rebuilding. Also, they were savy enough to stockpile picks and manuever to get players who they targeted to fit their system. A true youth movement has started. And I LOVE our first 4 picks....as well as Neild and Royster.
More importantly, not reaching for a QB or taking one that we weren't high on could have potentially saved us from making a HUGE mistake. Looks like; Gabbert = Kerrigan, Hankerson and Helu. I'll take that.
B+
SmootSmack 05-01-2011, 08:50 PM So SS, what should we have done in terms of drafting a QB? Take Gabbert at 10? Just curious.
Well, I didn't care especially for Gabbert. And don't get me wrong, I love that we stocked up on draft picks.
But I find it hard to believe there wasn't a single QB in the later rounds we could have taken. Will Rick Stanzi, for example, be better than Beck? Who knows. But I'd rather take a chance on a guy that's fresh out of college than rely (for now at least) on a 30 year old who in four years hasn't really shown much (unless, of course, he's the next Trent Green and I'm just not seeing it)
I understand times have changed, and the rules are different, but during Gibbs 1.0 he drafted a QB I think like 9 out of 12 years. I believe you should always have one young QB on your roster, but maybe that's just me
