The thing is the Giants are a team that puts a lot of importance in their front 7. More than we do. This guy played well for them. He's going to be a good player for us.

when i heard about this move i instantly thought 3-4 defensive end. hes pretty small for a nose tackle...

I think he means younger AND cheaper. The giants apparantly have guys they think will fill in well that are still in their rookie contracts. Not that Cofield is old, but the giants just have other priorities of where to spend their money, and would prefer to replace cofield with young/cheep talent and spend the money elsewhere.

In general the Giants do seem to be getting younger, of course not 100% of their moves will reflect that (like when I believe they will give Osi a big contract).

LOL....what he said.:)

Well but the Redskins got into this mess. Why make such a high investment in such a low character guy with a coach that was not in a stable situation? In the end, whether Haynesworth had worked or not, this team is notorious for putting square pegs in round holes. And part of this switch to the 3-4 means getting players that have both experience in playing the defense and/or are versatile enough to adjust to the new scheme.

My personal preference is a mix of the two. Cofield can excel as a 3-4 DE, and while he may do well as a 3-4 NT, personally I think it'd be a bit of a waste. The discussion is first and foremost on how players fit into scheme, and some fans like me hoping that the team uses new acquisitions to the best of their ability.

He played NT in college. He'll be fine at the NT spot.

Giants didn't let Barry Cofield leave without a fight, agent says | NJ.com (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/07/giants_didnt_let_barry_cofield.html)
"The thing about Barry is he played (nose tackle) in college and he's a big-body guy, so he's one of the few interior guys who can go either inside or outside. He has some versatility," said McCartney, a former director of personnel for the Eagles. "The one thing he hasn't had a chance to do a lot of is get up the field, and I think the Redskins' coaches did a good job of saying, 'We're going to utilize you in a variety of ways.'"

Yes, but he is better suited to play DE, that's my whole point.

I like the pick even more now, seems like a smart man.

He said he weighed 307 coming out of college and weighs a bit more now. I think he will be just fine at the NT spot.
