How is it not?
Basketball. I guess if they keep playing Duke it's okay but never again will it have ACC title implications. I guess Virginia can be scheduled. Still Big 10 is coming off it's weakest year in a long time and now they choose to join? Don't know how I feel about that.

A good article about why Maryland went to the Big 10
Maryland's probably going to the Big Ten. But why? - Testudo Times (http://www.testudotimes.com/2012/11/18/3659926/marylands-probably-going-to-the-big-ten-but-why)
I think this will be good in the long run for Maryland. Basketball will be fine, I assume there will still be an ACC-Big 10 Challenge? I think Maryland Basketball is rebuilding and reloading; they should be competitive in the next couple of years. Football-wise, I really don't know what will happen, but we are already a joke in that sport. The Big 10 wins big here by having access to a big TV market; possibly even bigger with the addition of Rutgers.

Well as Scott Van Pelt said, it's all about football. Basketball is good but it doesn't even come close to generating the type of revenue football does. However it worked out the Big 10 seemed to assure Maryland that they would never have to worry about ending the year in the red regardless of how they play.
Step 1: Join Big 10
Step 2: ?????
Step 3: Profit!
$$$ versus Founding member of the ACC steeped in history......$$$$ won, shame.....

Easy to be on a moral high ground when you're on the outside looking in
Do you agree with what they are doing Smoot?
Or just because they got they're tit in the ringer financially, and they need bailing out?
It appears to be a purely financial move...and I view that as a shame due to the history they leave behind especially in the world of basketball. Nobody reading this board will likely live ling enough to see those types of rivalries re-kindled.
UM has never really been a consistent football program or supported any differently. Roundball however was another matter...

I don't have any emotional attachment to the Terps, let me just say that first. Secondly, yes I do agree. Yeah it's primarily financial. So what? It's the most important thing here. History, tradition? None of that is going to solve the school's issues. And these rivalries everyone raves about are fading away regardless. There aren't any more annual home and homes with Duke or UNC.

Yeah its a real shame college athletics have become what this is all about. Thank god the kids dont get paid right? There alot of crooks and over paid crooks in colleges athletics...its a different issue, but its all tied together. Ill miss the good things Maryland brought to the conference, but its disappointing when it comes down to money.
Well we know Mark hated to fundraise, even though he is a "well deserved" millionaire. sad
