Daseal 03-07-2005, 05:19 PM I think we need to buckle down and just give Smoot that extra 2 million. Our defense will be in trouble if we're starting Walt Harris or a rookie. Don't forget, Springs had a great year last year, but he isn't exactly known for his durability. So we're not far from having our CB tandeem be Harris and Wilds.
Also - our defense scored ahead of Baltimore in every stat except scoring defense, and we weren't very far behind at all. Baltimore has the most overrated, media-hyped defense ever. Ray Lewis is old and losing a step, Reed is good, McCallister is good, Suggs is good, the rest are just benefitting from a nice system. Don't forget they lost their defensive coordinator too. Everyone hates Mike Nolan, but he had success.
BossHog 03-07-2005, 05:21 PM The Ravens have a great team, they should win the Maryland Department of Corrections' Super Bowl.
Ray Lewis - murderer
Gary Baxter - gambling racket boss
Terrell Suggs - violent drunk (assault)
Cornell Brown - drunk driver and drug user
Chris McCalister - drug user and drunk driver
Antrelle Rolle - wife beater
Jamal Lewis - drug dealer
You mean Samari Rolle. Antrelle Rolle will be selected in this year draft. :oink:
BossHog 03-07-2005, 05:23 PM ...Rolle will get $12 million his first year with the team, plus will get a $11 million signing bonus. Essentially, Rolle will get in excess $20 million in guaranteed money - unless the Ravens cut him before September (which, is extremely unlikely).
How you figure $12 million and $11 million? :oink:
BossHog 03-07-2005, 05:26 PM So when Smoot signs with KC, we have no choice but to draft a CB? Yesteryears FA free-spending has really caught up with us. :oink:
JoeRedskin 03-07-2005, 05:34 PM Initially, I thought the deal might have provided the team with leverage in negotiations with Fred Smoot. Unfortunately, upon closer examination of the terms of the contract, I have come to believe the deal might actually help Smoot get a bigger deal.

From ESPN:"Rolle, considered one of the league's best coverage cornerbacks, agreed to a six-year, $30.5 million contract that included an $11 million signing bonus, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported. Rolle will receive $12 million in the first year of the contract and $18 million over the first three years of the deal." http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2007289
I think the 12M your talking about already includes the signing bonus. If this is what the top CB in the market is getting, our offer to Smoot is pretty damn close. At this point, I'm with Daseal - suck it up, offer a little more and, in return, get Smoot to structure it in a cap friendly manner.
Daseal 03-07-2005, 05:34 PM Bosshog - the Coles trade handcuffed us, if you consider that bad FA spending - then right you are.
and he said 11M was signing bonus, 12 M was salary.
bigm29 03-07-2005, 05:36 PM by the way they are about to talk about the redskins on PTI in a few minutes on espn

No, I said we cannot overlook cornerback with the 9th pick. Like others here, I'd be very nervous about Harris, Springs and Wilds in the secondary. And if one of them goes down, somebody's going to get picked on, and our pass defense is exposed.
I say that because I don't necessarily think that we'll take a wide receiver in the first round now. Unless they're planning to dump James Thrash, or let Taylor Jacobs keep the bench warm again this season, a fifth wideout who also happens to be a rookie simply won't get a whole lot of playing time. Patten and Moss are instant starters in my mind. They're the replacements for Coles and Gardner. In Joe Gibbs offense, with a heavy emphasis on the running game, there's no reason to spend such a high pick on a guy who just won't see much of the field this season.
I think we now have other pressing needs.
Daseal 03-07-2005, 05:41 PM I wouldn't be suprised to see us run more 3-4 WR sets this year if Gibbs actually does open it up. I think Jacobs deserves the 3rd spot, rookie 4th, and keep Thrash our special teams ace with occassional receiver work!
SKINSnCANES 03-07-2005, 05:47 PM holy shit!?!?!??!?!?!?!? So let me get this straight, Rolle was rated as the top corner in free agency and he got 11 million. We offered Smoot 10. That means that Snyder actually made a competitive offer. People always give Snyder shit, either he overpays or he tries and screws the player. It looks like Smoot was offered exactly what hes worth, and Snyder took a stand and said we want you, and we watn to give you what you are worth. He isnt over paying, he isnt underpaying. Hes offering our own grown player market value. Im very happy to hear that Rolle only got 11
