Need Help Purchasing A LaptopThat Guy 05-10-2013, 09:24 AM i remember before SP1 in vista... try to copy 5,000 files - time remaining: 12 hours. after SP1, time remaining: 2 minutes. wtf? firstdown 05-14-2013, 11:19 AM Well we have finally moved so I told my wife to read this thread and to go buy something today.I told her she could spend up to $600 what's the odds she spends more? CRedskinsRule 05-14-2013, 11:45 AM So I had a Toshiba laptop that always ran hot, had it for years, and usually could resolve most quirks. The other day I came home, turned it on, and... nothing. no bios screen, no home screen the power light comes on, but there is no harddrive activity whatsoever. I took out the harddrive and reseated it, I took the ram out, and reseated it. I let it charge for more than enough time, and I took out the battery, and reseated it. Still nothing. Anyone have any ideas, or is it officially dead? 724Skinsfan 05-14-2013, 12:27 PM No beeps? Sounds power related then. Take the battery out and use just the AC adapter. Then put the battery back in. I just had a 2 year old Lenovo that I was working on and that did the trick. CRedskinsRule 05-14-2013, 12:31 PM Thanks, no beeps, nothing. I did try just AC, and didn't work either. My assumption is that the bios chip overheated, but I have never actually seen a computer that didn't atleast read the bios. 724Skinsfan 05-14-2013, 02:09 PM Yeah, I wonder if there's a solder gap? Is the lcd screen backlight on? Usually you'll get a beep code, though. If you have time to waste, look on Youtube for reflowing a motherboard. It's worked for me several times and it only costs you a thermal paste tube/patch (plus the joy of completely tearing apart your laptop). You might be able to get a mobo cheap online and replace it, instead. CRedskinsRule 05-14-2013, 02:25 PM I will tear it apart and see what I find. Thanks :headbanger: That Guy 05-14-2013, 02:27 PM laptop motherboards aren't cheap. $100-250 depending, so you can get a new system for that. it's probably not the bios chip, it's probably the power supply on the inside of the laptop, that tends to be a high fail item. if the northbridge etc ran superhot and the thermal transfer failed between it and the heatsink, that could cause a brick too, but it's less likely (the chip would be dead at that point) -- that happened to a laptop gpu years and years ago for me. microcenter has a $400 15.6" dell i5 (win8) right now. office depot is still the easiest and cheap. firstdown 05-15-2013, 11:07 AM Whats the difference between a Laptop, Notebook, or sleekbook? HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b085nr (http://www.officemax.com/technology/computers/laptop-computers/product-prod4780020?cm_sp=spb-_-laptops2-_-offer2) Notebook is the new trendy name for a laptop. The Sleekbook must be a HP product name. The dimensions say it's 1.41" thick so that must be the reason for the name. Don't forget Netbooks! (the mini-laptops for internet browsing) | |
