My take on clowney is that he knows he's great and he knows he's going to be making millions, he probably has a minor injury which he could play through but he doesn't want to risk anything so he's playing really cautious right now, and wants to go to the combine 100% healthy.
Probably rite, but why come back at all if you are going to be that cautious. Sort of a dick move to the school, staff, and his teammates.
He may not really be hurting his draft stock, but he is certainly not helping it.

NFL execs: No one cares Jadeveon Clowney is hurt, draft stock is fine (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2013/10/07/jadeveon-clowney-2014-draft-south-carolina-gamecocks-steve-spurrier-marcus-lattimore/2935999/)
"Nah, no one will care," an executive in personnel for an NFL team told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday. "If he's healthy, works out well and most importantly interviews well, it won't hurt him."
No source? Just one guy? C'mon man. You would be a complete idiot not to ding him on a character issue if the man quit on his teammates. You don't think he'll quit on you at the slightest convenience? It's one thing to skip the combine or the Senior bowl. It's another to quit on your teammates mid-season.

He came back because he had to. He's a junior. If your asking why comeback on the field, well it looks a lot worse if you're perfectly healthy on the sidelines not trying as opposed to on the field half assing it.

Yeah since the Jets got rid of the dumbasses on the field and organization (GM, O-Cor, Sanchez) they've played a ton better. Rex doing a good job. Addition by subtraction folks.
For the record, I've been a big Rex Ryan supporter. I've always thought he's a very good coach. When you have a bad QB (Sanchez) your bit going to look like a good coach. Give belichick Sanchez and you'd see all of New England calling for Bill to be fired.

2 execs commented and said no big deal.
Sources can't be named since they aren't allowed to comment publicly on a college player.
I think most NFL execs are smart enough to see the big picture and what's really going on with him.

I think the arrival of Marty Morninwheg and Ryan's trust in him is being overlooked

In his case, he should have just hired a agent at the start of the season, sit this year out and enter the draft. Why do this to your teammates? It's low class regardless of the excuse. I would have no issues with him sitting out the entire year had that been his plan from the get go.

Clowney really coudn't do that.
I understand your point. His actions hardly scream "team player" and he is left open for suspicion that he's just in it for the money.
But in terms of preparing for the NFL he is taking a rational approach which NFLers will understand.

I wasnt sure if he chose to come back or had to. That being said i totally disagree. He was a lock as the top d pick last year. I would have more faith in a guy that was up front with his team and trained for the nfl for a year as opposed to a guy who is half assing anything and letting down his teammates.
