The good news is that if we can get some competent leadership in the building under Bruce Allen, this team could turn around very, very quickly. By 2014.

The problem of course is that this is almost exactly the same situation as 2006 (turned around immediately), and 2009 (not so much), so there are no guarantees. Joe Gibbs/Al Saunders/Gregg Williams got the Redskins on track and didn't waste any time. Mike Shanhan/Kyle Shanahan/Jim Haslett spend all the time, didn't really change the situation any.

Try reading my comment first. I said that I CAN'T think of a single game this year where they (Redskins) won the special teams battle. ST has been a HUGE liability all year. They looked like the Keystone Cops on the fake punt, were saved by their own ineptitude (illegal procedure), yet given a second chance, gave up a 20 yard return with a 15 yard personal foul tacked on. Minnesota only had to drive 41 yards for the go ahead score from there. Keith Burns cannot be brought back next year.Reminded me so much of Donovan McNabb's pick six against Chicago that called back by delay of game.

The Shanahan era has been fun, in a self-hating sort of way.

The two stupidest losses I've witnessed as a fan were both season openers: 06 vs Minnesota, and 13 vs Philadelphia. Both games were the first game of seasons where the Redskins entered with very legitimate playoff aspirations, and signaled doom for the rest of the season with home losses to bad teams. (Honorable mention: 08 vs St. Louis and 09 vs Detroit)

...And to think I attended both of those season opening stinkers

I wonder if there's any more money we can give Larry Johnson to turn this season around.

That is all that needs to be said here. We need a new coaching staff, from the top down. Kyle is horrible, Mike is in la la land with RG3 and clock management, ST coach is.........I dont think there is an adjective suitable for how bad we are, Secondary coach is blah.....................We need new coaches. Even with RG3 Alfmo and Garcon, we can't make this work with these coaches.

As much as we all want to just fire everyone cause that's how we as fans are, most of this still falls on the players. The players are underperforming or they're not really that good. I think we just don't have enough good players. We have a few guys that are probably at the top 5 at their positions...Williams, Morris...maybe Garçon and Hall. That's it.

Totally agree with this. You talked about messaging somewhere here, and it's a good description of another thing really lacking from current leadership. I actually think the cap penalty is a good example, or the reaction more precisely. I think the right message has the whole roster fired up over the penalty, an us vs the league dynamic, and if nothing else you get intensity, motivation and comeraderie from it. Think band of brothers type thing.

I still would be willing to give Shanahan another year in theory, but we should all know there's no realistic way to make this a good ending for him. Sure the play-calling on offense improved the last couple weeks but it's far from excellent and any HC content with the big picture over the last four seasons doesn't deserve another chance. By my count we should have scored a minimum of 42 points on Thursday. Piss poor playcalling/execcution in the redzone and the mid field play where RG missed Moss wide open for a touchdown, those things keep happening over and over and over. Same with the defense. Mike might fire Haslett and Burns, but that shouldn't be enough to keep his job. And he's not going to send his kiddo packing with nowhere to go.

So yeah, it's reality day for the whole coaching staff with Morris being a possible exception.

I don't think a lame duck Shanahan year would be the worst thing (it may be the worst thing for RG3, however), but once you strip him of all his power and bring in a personnel guy over his head...what exactly is the point of keeping him? Save some money, I guess?

The cool thing about owning an NFL team is that Dan Snyder gets an infinite amount of chances to try again and get it right. Time to try again. Third time is the charm...but what about the third-third time?

That's it.The good news is that the contracts are mostly manageable. There's going to be some deadcap on the books next year because of the 2012 FA signings that didn't work (Morgan, Meriweather), but outside of Garcon, Cofield, and Bowen, we're not dealing with any out of whack contacts.

Upgrading the talent level of this roster should be fairly straightforward.
