SolidSnake84 12-02-2013, 08:37 PM I think when the coaches retire and go to the booth, do TV, etc, they are still around the game and involved with current players, coaches, etc...
Gruden still does his QB camp and all that. I wouldn't say its passed him by.
With all due respect to Coach Gibbs, If i understand it he was completely away from football alltogether until he was part of that group that tried to buy the Atlanta Falcons....
Who knew I'd spark this much outrage.
All over the wrong guy too

Well fuck, guess it pays to read the previous page for more context lol. Either that or read between the lines a bit better.

Gruden is absolutely the wrong guy.

Sometimes ... I really, really hate you.
I am going to have my daddy come and kick you in the nuts every day for a year.

No. Coach Gibbs, after his retirement, went into the booth to do football game commentary for the NFL, and then was on one of the NFL pre-game shows (for I think either CBS or NBC.) So, he was around the NFL even after his retirement.
Lotus 12-03-2013, 04:13 PM Not to belabor the point, but wasn't Shanny as equally invested in the nfl throughout his yearlong exile? That seemingly didn't help much.
Gruden has been out of the NFL for five years, and hasn't really been actively coaching and working with players to the same degree he would have during his coaching years. I just fear that something may have been lost. Should he be hired, 3 of the past 4 coaches would have had some duration of absence from the game, and the two we've worked with have had marginal success. Granted, two instances isn't necessarily a trend, and it doesn't factor into how gruden will perform, I worry about the odds, regardless. I'd much rather try our luck with an up and comer than a retread.
I completely agree about Jon Gruden or any other retread candidate.
Vermeil, mentioned above, did not win a SB until he got to the Rams so is not the same as Shanahan, Gibbs, or Jon Gruden.
I hope we hire a first-time NFL head coach who has that raw, unsatisfied hunger to win a Super Bowl. Jay Gruden fits this description whereas Chucky does not.
SBXVII 12-03-2013, 05:16 PM He didn't take Oakland to the SB but that was his team. That was his offense. He made Rich Gannon into a star. Made Brad Johnson into a SB QB. If I'm Dan Snyder, Jon Gruden is the first person that I'm getting on the phone. I think he's just what this team needs.
I apologize folks, I stand corrected. BUT...... If he can take the Raiders from last place in the AFC division to lead it 3 yrs in a row and post a 12-4 season? I'll take that everytime.
Under Gruden, the Raiders posted consecutive 8–8 seasons in 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Oakland_Raiders_season) and 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Oakland_Raiders_season), and leapt out of last place in the AFC West. After uniting with journeyman quarterback Rich Gannon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Gannon), Gruden led the Raiders to the top of the AFC West and made the playoffs three straight seasons (the third time under Head Coach Bill Callahan). Oakland finished 12–4 in the 2000 season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Oakland_Raiders_season), the team's most successful in a decade, and its first division title since 1990 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Oakland_Raiders_season), ultimately reaching the AFC Championship, where they lost 16–3 to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. While Gruden was with the Raiders, Gruden acquired his nickname "Chucky" from Raiders defensive lineman Grady Jackson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grady_Jackson), who thought that the coach looked like the fictional character "Chucky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chucky_(Child%27s_Play))" in the 1988 movie Child's Play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child%27s_Play_(1988_film)).
