As much as I am a Phillips fan, I am glad they seem to be conducting an actual search.
I believe Phillips has the inside track but am not convinced he has it locked up.
Mangini is interesting in a number of ways. Another solid DC candidate w/ head coaching experience. Again, don't think I would want him as a HC, but am comfortable with him as a DC.

Why is it a given that Jay is fired next year? He's finally got the reigns to hire his own staff. How about we give him some time. It works for real teams.

Leaving aside the fact that there are real reasons to doubt Gruden, the fact is that he doesn't work alone. Bruce has been there five years. If we go 4-12 again, the smart decision will be to clean house and start from scratch.
And, given that Bruce Allen has averaged 5-11 seasons since he has been here, there is a very good chance that we will suck again, regardless of who is coaching.

Let me cherry pick the last sentence of your first paragraph. For the first time in a long time, our organization is not about next year.
I get the feeling it is about building a team that has the depth to compete year in and year out.
The success that SF enjoyed because of the new GM didn't occur immediately. They endured several bad losing seasons while building not buying talent and depth. When he left them for Seattle, SF was big, talented, and had great depth. They barely missed a beat due to injuries.
We need to be one of those organizations. The new GM's philosophy prioritizes long term success rather than instant gratification. I love this move by our FO.
