Alex Effect - 2019 Draft

It’s funny I was just thinking this week we should be due for some sort of update on Alex and now word of an infection. Not uncommon with that type of injury but still, wish him the best

Dang! Prayers for Smith. Suddenly, I'm not so worried about him being able to play again, I just hope he's able to get through this without losing half his leg.

Coach Jay Gruden and team president Bruce Allen never expected to be in this position after signing Alex Smith to a four-year contract extension last March with $55 million guaranteed. There's no telling how Smith will recover from the compound leg fracture he suffered last month -- Thursday brought the troubling news that he's battling an infection related to his leg surgery -- but, unfortunately, the specifics of Smith's contract could force Washington to make an early decision about his future. Even though the Redskins owe $15 million guaranteed to Smith next season, they could decide to cut him before the fifth day of the new league year in 2019 to avoid guaranteeing his 2020 salary.


This is the brutal calculus of NFL injuries. Even in a best-case scenario for Smith's recovery, the Redskins are overdue to draft a potential replacement. Gruden has never attempted to develop a highly drafted young quarterback in Washington. (This all assumes Gruden is around to coach the team for a sixth season, which he deserves considering the awful injury luck his team has had the last two years.) The Gruden family's style is to look for veterans, so perhaps the Redskins could be players in the Teddy Bridgewater or Tyrod Taylor market.

I don't think that story is accurate. The contract has injury guarantees for the 2020 season according to spotrac:

Contract Notes:
$55M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2018 salary + 2019 salary)
2020 salary fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2019, currently guaranteed for injury


If AS' career is at an end, we are on the hook for about 42 million over the next 2 years. or a mid tier qb's pay. We will be looking at 2 rookies, and likely neither will be a projected starter, because with Skins curse we will win 3 of the next 4, back in to the playoffs and pick 22nd...

With our cap space the way it is, it seems the only feasible option at QB is the draft.

Personally, I would love to see Gruden with a chance to pick "his guy" and develop him from day one. Give me Drew Lock out of Mizzou and put a couple weapons around him.

I know most are against keeping Gruden but I haven't lost faith just yet. Since coming to D.C. his QB situation has been less than ideal. I wanna see what he can do with a rookie QB before giving him the boot.

This is a stretch man.
Gruden has had a ProBowl QB the two previous years.
I'm not going to mention the dudes name but he wasn't a "Less than ideal" QB unless your ideal QB is Rodgers or Brady.

Wanting Gruden to stick around to develop the next Brady or Rodgers would be a mistake. We need a coach that will develop the whole team.

Sadly we are heading back to the Beck/ Grossman years. I don’t see Alex coming back.
