Stats + intangibles. Moss and Patten are Gibbs guys through and through but he doesn't expect everyone to care about that so he'll focus on the stats to the press. else again, we'd have T.O. infecting our team.
Like I was saying though, you can't say that TO isn't a great reciever. He's not a good teammate, but he's a very good reciever.

I've said a few times in this thread that there are other things that make a player great and other things that I respect. However, truly great players have great stats. Monk has great stats, just the HOF voters are dicks.
I love players like Lorenzo Neal because he's one of the ultimate "team" guys. However, you can't honestly tell me that you don't use stats to judge greatness.
greatness is very relative. stats are just a part of that.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I do agree with that statement to an extent, but history doesn't show that. To cross sports, Bobby Jones is recognized as one of the greatest golfers, but he was a racist. Same with Ty Cobb. It's difficult to say that greatness is relative because history doesn't always support your arguement.
What Terrell Owens does on the football field is great. He's one of very few recievers EVER with 100 TD catches. He's a very good reciever.

I would agree with that.

If you had told me this morning that this thread had enough legs to last 10 pages, I would have said you were crazy. I stand corrected.

the first thing that caught gibbs attention was the YPC stat from both moss and patten that is the reason gibbs pursued them in the first place, now of course gibbs would not have gone after a player like owens because it is so well documented that owens is an asshole. if you think gibbs doesn't factor in a players stats when deciding whether or not to go after them then you are naive(sp).

it's because we've switched from discussing portis to discussing stats.

you just rephrased what I said right there - stats & intangibles. T0 being an asshole is intangible. Moss, Patten and Portis's work ethic are too. and that speaks more to Gibbs than whatever edge others may have in stats.
