Smoot, I always wondered what you did up there. That sounds like a very fun and demanding job full of a good bit of stress to perform.
Now I know why you may get a little defensive when folks bash ESPN's programming! I can see why it may be a little personal to you. P.S. I was holding out hope that you were secretly Scott Van Pelt. lol... by far one of my favorite on air personalitys at the Mothership.
I only get defensive when people make assumptions, but I realize that not everyone has access to the same info I do so my point of view is different on certain things. I think I have seen SVP maybe two times in my four years here |
I'm a moderator on a Redskins message board...but to pay the bills I do other stuff. I used to acquire programming rights and schedule them on ESPN's tv networks, along with a team of others. Now I work mainly in the non-tv world. My job deals with a lot of stuff that doesn't exist yet. Not to be all CIA on you, but I work on the business strategy for ESPN projects that are months, sometimes years, down the road and how to make it successful for fans, leagues, advertisers, etc. So one day when say you're watching Monday Night Football on your Wii while chatting with Trent Dilfer, you'll think of me
R+D, sounds like a dream job. You know what, forget the government job I wun works 4 ESPEN! I mean come on I'm a guy who likes sports in America. I'm like super rare. Ironically according to a few of my friends this simple fact qualifies me for a position at ESPN. On a separate note, where are all the "Sam Bradford is a terrible QB" people? Now you understand why we wanted him. Not that I'm unhappy with what we did this offseason in any way, shape, or form, but now we see why Bradford was so highly regarded. Then again it is only preseason. |

I truly enjoy Sportscenter most of the year, except those summer months when the only thing to cover is baseball highlights, as a life long o's fan, i have truly lost most of the interest I had in baseball. I'll watch a playoff game or 2, followed the 'redsox and phillies runs to a championship a couple of years back. |
Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
BTW I know I have made some generalized espn bashing comments at times.

Then you must have had something to do with the World Cup. I thought that you guys did a great job with that. Now that I think of it, you wanted Spain to win and Spain won...I smell a fix! :) |
Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
Because it's about the brand name really. Monday Night Football should be viewed together as one phrase, don't focus so much on the Monday part of it
kind of like the Red Zone not really being red haha jus tmessing with you |

No worries. Yeah most days it's fun, but that's more because of the people I work with than the place I work at. It is cool to be there and enjoy some of the more unusual perks (like tossing the football with Drew Brees), but at the end of the day it's a job like any other and like any other job it can get frustrating. Lotus-I was very involved in the World Cup...but there was no fix ;) As for SportsCenter, on a day to day basis my work has almost nothing to do with SC or the NFL. (The Redskins/NFL info I sometimes provide here often comes from previous connections from my days covering the Skins, though I talk to the NFL guys at ESPN all the time, more so behind the scenes guys) My long-term projects are heavily revolved around it though. As for the preseason, tough break for Donnie Avery (no pun intended). And I was thinking Packers vs. Pats earlier this week as my Super Bowl prediction, feeling a bit more comfortable about it after last night. |
Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
Bradford sure looked good last night, didn't see that one coming considering the rough start he had to the preseason.
|
Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
I was impressed but I will not pass judgement until I see teams gameplanning for him.

Yeah, it was a Colt Brennan-rookie kind of performance. |
Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
The Packers are going to be a tough team for any to beat. They must have the deepest WR core in the game as well as so many good skill players. I would not be surprised if they sweep the Vikings this year ruining Farves come back.

Re: 2010 NFL Preseason
Ok guys, I can't find a thread for this, but does anyone outside of the DC area know if there is a Live stream of the Skins/Jets game online tonight? I live in KY and found one last week for the Ravens game. Thanks and sorry for putting this in the wrong thread.
