Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
If he shows up for camp without any contract "issues", I would think that Coach Gibbs would have every right to ask him for a direct answer to a simple question:
So how come you wouldn't return any of my calls? There is a certain level of "courtesy" and "mutual respect" that gets lost when one person will not take or return calls from someone else and frankly Sean Taylor has not yet achieved the status where he can routinely "dis" an extablished NFL coach. Will he start? Probably. Will he play? Absolutely. Maybe he does not start the first quarter of the first game of the year, but he definitely plays after that. Would I hold him out for a while in that first game - as they did last season? It would depend on if I really thought it would teach him something about how NFL life happens in the off-season. If I thought it would shock him into some sense of reality, I'd sit him for a quarter. If I thought it would be a good message to the rest of the team about how to behave when your coaching staff is trying to get in touch with you, I might sit him out for a quarter. Since I doubt he's gonna "learn much" and go through any great changes in his outlook, it won't do much good to sit him down. so what might be the effect on the rest of the team? That's the key question here... And yes, I still believe that Sean Taylor is a MEATHEAD who has exceptional physical skills to play football... |

Well Schneed, if you had read my initial post on page one of this thread, you would see that I did, in fact, answer the mother-fu*king question. And I QUOTE: "I say sit him. I'm sick of catering to pouting 22 year-olds who think they're somehow above the team and can make up and live by their own rules. Not for the whole season, but send a message that he's not indispensible. Last year we had the #3 D in the entire NFL, and we did that without him being a starter the first few games, without Arrington for most of the season, without Daniels for most of the season, without Barrow (who was the projected starter going into the year), without Bowen for a host of games, and without other defensive players for games here and there througout the season. I have no reason to believe this year will be any different. It's GW's system that makes our defense great, not Sean Taylor." I've also addressed the "voluntary" issue when I said: "And I don't buy this "voluntary" argument. That's BS. EVERY OTHER teammate who can be there is there right now. If it's so "voluntary", then why doesn't the whole rest of the team have a problem showing up? Come on, he's looking like a punk right now, plain and simple. He's got absolutely NO REASON to not be there with the team. NONE." Any more questions? |

If I'm the coach (and obviously, I'm not), I send a message to everyone that starters are team guys who come to OTA's when they have no reason not to. Does he play in game 1? Of course. But he doesn't take the field as a starting safety on my team. |
PSUfan - Perhaps his family has jobs and they can't spend every waking moment in DC. He's playing pro ball, not supporting his support structure.
And how would that make him any different from EVERY OTHER player in the NFL? I'm not saying they should "spend every waking moment in DC," but he certainly has greater means to have his family visit him than the normal, everyday Joe who relocates for a job or goes off to school. Again, why is it that we got stuck with the most emotionally fragile player in the NFL (if his adjustment to DC was so hard and if it's true that he's just really missing home......where he's been for months now)? It's not like there has never been a rookie in the NFL that's had to leave his home to start a life for himself. Yet here we are, trying to figure out why Taylor is seemingly the only guy in the NFL that can't make it to OTA's because why? Really, why? Plenty of guys aren't there because of injury (Arrington, Barrow), or legitimate excused personal reasons (Tupa), or holding out for a better contract (TO), or because they are going to be traded or released anyway (Gardner). So who in the NFL isn't there because they just want to spend more time at home? That's right, our guy. It's just rediculous. Here we are speculating that he's not there because he's "burned out" in his second year? Is that some kind of a joke? Other than Eric Crouch, I can't recall a player getting "burned out" so fast. |
Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
Thank God you're not the coach, PSU. Sorry, I missed your first post somehow. I can't believe you actually would keep Taylor out of the starting lineup for something this insignificant. If you follow that logic, you'd be sitting Javon Walker, Donovan Darius, and countless other players around the league who have held out for various reasons. And you'd end up losing games. Hell, you'd even have to sit Santana Moss. After all, he was under contract for one more year while he was sitting out waiting for his new contract, missing these voluntary practices.
If you do it to Taylor you have to do it to everyone else. Think about sitting someone like Terrell Owens, who is calling out his QB in the media. But don't sit Sean Taylor for missing a series of practices that are taking place FIVE MONTHS before the season begins. |

Like I said before, this the NFL, not HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL, to win at this level you have to play the best players you have!!! You talk about a "TEAM" wouldnt you be hurting your team if you put incompentent players on the field while you bench the best player just to teach him a lesson? Sooner or later the players will turn on you!!!

Generally speaking, you do have to put the best players on the field. However, disciplinary measures (i.e. benching a player) are a necessary evil when a player "acts out." Gibbs benched Taylor for missing a practice in the game against the Packers even though he was certainly our best safety. I think it would be "high school football" to allow a player to miss mandatory practices/camps and not punish him by benching him for a game or two. |

You are right Gibbs did bench Taylor for the Green Bay game, but also wasnt that for his DUI along with missing a practice? Also is that not more important than Taylor missing voulentary workouts? Untill Taylor missed mandatory practices/camps you can not bench him. I agree with your statment too, it would be "high shcool football" to allow a player miss mandatory events and still play him. And it would be "high school football" to bench a player for missing voulentary off-season workouts. But as of this season so far Taylor has yet to miss mandatory anything. When/if he does then yes take the approprate measures against him, but not until he does. |
Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
Taylor was benched for missing the practice and supposedly, it had nothing to do with the DUI.
I agree that you shouldn't necessarily bench Taylor for missing voluntary workouts. It would be a TOTALLY different story, in my mind at least, if he missed any camps. |

He has said Sean Taylor does things that you can't coach, with his speed and ability to cover such a large part of the field. That's the part you can't replace, I think Sean Taylor adds flexibility to the defense, because he has the ability to cover for mistakes that teammates might make just by his pure speed. Plus, I'm concerned about our MLB position. Without a brain like Pierce calling the shots, we might have more defenders caught out of position this year. I think we're going to need Sean Taylor's recovery skills in there. Hopefully somebody can step up to be the QB of the D this year. Sean Taylor is definitely a punk, that much we can agree on! :food-smil |

I think, and hope, that he realizes all of his talents and becomes the pro bowler most of us believe he can become. And I think he's a valuable part of our Defense (I too have some concerns at MLB). No doubt about that. In all my negativity I don't want it to be lost that I believe he can be the best safety in football in a very short time. To get there, though, he needs to get his head in the game. I would hope that having his "starter" title stripped from him for a few games might do that, but I'm probably just naive to think it would work given his attitude so far. I think the only place we really differed in this whole discussion was what, if any, actions should be taken to discipline him for what he's done so far. We can agree to disagree on that and both hope for an improved, more mature Sean Taylor to develop throughout 2005 and beyond.:biggthump |
Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
ST does have amazing football skills but what he needs to develop even more are his mental skills. He needs to learn to read QBs better and recognize routes faster. Thsi is why his missing any of these workouts or even mini camp is be so bad. His body will be ready but his mind might not be and thats where games are won & lost.

Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
Personally I don't like Ed Reed that much, he's smarter (due to massive game preperation) than Taylor but lacks the physical gifts. I think Ray Lewis is the most over-rated player in the NFL, but damned if he isn't an amazing leader, if the skins could get a veteran guy that the young ones expected, watch film at his house, etc. I think it would help rookies like this.
Taylor is still young though, he has a nasty mean streak, and how many times did you see (after the ball was thrown) him leave his position and be only one step away from making a huge play. I don't even really think Dallas was his fault, of course you're going to double up Keyshawn, not the UDFA WR. But, that can be debated forever. |

Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
SC, it was his rookie season, Taylor will be a year wiser and no slower athletically.
He'll be really great this season. |
Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
Exactly. Only thing that will gain him that step is gametime experience.
But that's just it. The year doesn't seem to have made Taylor a wit wiser, and missing the OTA's isn't helping. Parents who love their children discipline them so that they become wise, mature adults. Otherwise, their children grow up to be spoiled brats. A coach that ignores Taylor's misbehaving and lack of respect is doing no favors for either Taylor or the team. If anything has a chance to drive some of the selfishness and immaturity out of Taylor, it is discipline. Fawning over his on-the-field exploits while ignoring his lack of character will only ever create a bigger spoiled brat. I don't know what form the discipline should take in this instance, but I'm with SC in that Gibbs needs to get up in Sean Taylor's face and press him for a respectful answer as to why Taylor didn't return any of the phone calls. Depending on that answer, I would think some sort of discipline might not only be in order, but downright beneficial to Taylor and to the team. I wouldn't rule out a temporary benching as a possible form for that discipline. --Phin |

Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
I hope he shows up at minicamp, and Coach Williams "rewards" him for missing the voluntary camps by doubly working his ass off...............

Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
Schneed and PSU,
Thanks for the clarifications. I was only kidding about the "benching"....sort of, kind of. LOL. I too enjoy good debates (as many on this site know) and I've dropped F-bombs before, I just wanted to step in before it got too hot. Feel free to call me out anytime you think I'm starting to go "personal." Sometimes miscommunications during debates lead to a slightly "hotter" debating climate than is necessary - again, I know from firsthand experience. Thanks though guys. Let the debating continue! :food-smil |

No problem RF. No doubt, the hardest thing to get across in posts is a person's tone. So many times it's not what you say, but how you say it........and you can't get the "how you say it" in the typewritten word. That's why you Mods are so important....you make us take a minute to consider that maybe the person isn't saying it the way you think they are. So thank you. Now, back to hunting for a topic that I can get into an argument over! :FIREdevil :laughing- |
Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
You're a bastard. How's that for a topic.
:) Let the argument begin!! :joke: |

Re: Sean Taylor - What if...
You play the kid. First day, when he returns. Do I agree that he isn't with the rest of the team working out hard? NO. No way...
Does everyone here put their faith in Gregg Williams? Doesn't everyone know he knows what the hell he is doing. I don't have an exact quote but Wiliams has stated that he LOVES this guy. That he is the most talented player he has ever coached and he like the way he plays and his aggressiveness and how he leaves it all on the field. Having said that (not exactly but you know what i mean) Williams has coached a lot of guys in the NFL and that is a pretty hefty statement about Sean Taylor. And Williams isn't someone to just blow smoke to make someone feel all fuzzy. As for the others saying that we were good without Lavar and the rest of the D that was injured, doesn't mean that we wanted to be without those players. It doesn't mean that it was the best case scenerio for our team. You have to play your studs and S.T. is a STUD. Remember he was only a rookie and I saw Champ get burned more times than Taylor last year. PUT HIM OUT THERE AND WIN GAMES |
