Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
I just heard that extra points have a success rate of 99.1% since 2004.

So again why is anyone objectively against changing up a play that's become almost automatic?
So based on this and this, maybe move the PAT LOS to the 25. And move the 2PT LOS to the 5, or do away with it.

Actually, I'd leave things the way they are. The whole point of the PAT is that it's a sure thing, versus gambling for 2. But I think teams are going to go for 2 more often, as rules keep favoring the offense, so that's where the excitement and drama will be, not over whether a PAT will be good, but whether a team goes for 1 or 2.
40 yard kick = 1 point
55-60 yard kick or conversion from the 2 yard line = 2 points

something along those lines may spice things up.
I like this idea the best if theyre going to change it.
If they did eliminate it it could only help the skins, they cant find a good kicker to save their ass.How many kickers have we had the past 20yrs?
Yeah Kia was great as a rookie and decent last yr but his kickoffs suck

So after I posted this I googled it and found this article from 2012 and was not surprised by what I found:

If Billy Cundiff is gone from the Redskins by Sunday’s game, the team will ask a 19th employee to attempt a field goal since 1994. (Well, assuming the team attempts a field goal on Sunday. And assuming it isn’t taken by Graham Gano.)
We’ve been over this ground before — see this post from 2009, for example, when I included lots of photos of Redskins placekickers from the dismal past. The point is, Washington uses many kickers.
Just saying that “19″ number out loud makes it seem like ominous, but is it actually higher the number of kickers used by your average NFL team? Well, yes. By a lot.
In fact, no other team has used more than 13 field-goal kickers since 1994. Also, three-quarters of the league — 24 teams — have used nine or fewer kickers, less than half of Washington’s total if Cundiff goes. (Research via Pro Football Reference.)
Maybe kill two birds with one stone, and stop fighting the players with celebrations while revamping scoring. Allow excessive celebration for extra points and have celebrity judges or fans text in the score and award extra points based on their score.

And I'm spent . . .

I'm surprised to see the vote split 50/50. I didn't think dropping the extra point would matter to most people. In this vote, am I sensing a general resistance to the way Goodell & Co. are changing the game?
No one could objectively be against eliminating the PAT. It is literally useless in terms of entertainment. Being against it would simply be a grumpy old man type fear of change.
Or just likes the game the way it is .

Adjust it , move it back , ok , but eliminate it ......no .So why have kickoffs , just start at the 20 after every score .Matty you said the success rate is 99.1 since 04 ,it's that .09 that makes it interesting and exciting .

That's not an objective argument. That's the fear of change argument. I like the game too...that doesn't mean it can't be made better. I ask this...why? Why is it better with a 99.1% always-made-kick that generates virtually no excitement?

Or the fact something happens 99.1% of the time without incident makes it F'ing boring.

I think every team should have to go for 2. That would make games way more interesting.
Can there be exceptions to the rules for Denver?
Why? If the air makes the balls fly better, than the temperature makes the ball rock hard. :D

That is something to deal with but the Rockies cut down on the home runs by storing balls in a humidor, so maybe they could throw the footballs in there too.

No, it makes you want to rip your hair out and the kicker's legs off.

It's not exciting, you either laugh uncontrollably or you blow a gasket depending on which side you're on.

You call this exciting?

The .09% chance of anything is only interesting if you are the one holding a winning lottery ticket.

Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point

If you can accept that the current PAT is simply perfunctory, which the numbers bare out, then you'd have to accept that TDs are functionally worth 7 points in today's NFL. Start from that point of view and follow a logical path of reasoning to understand why it should be changed in some way.

I personally think moving it back or making it more difficult in some other way actually changes the game MORE than just formally making TDs worth 7 and integrating the +1/-1 idea. So in some ways I am against drastic changes.
