Raiders' WR Porter to Test Free Agency

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/11/24/bc.fbn.raiders.porter.ap/index.html

For all those Gardner haters out there (which, by now seems to include just about everyone but me), Porter has expressed doubt about returning to the Raiders. If he tests free agency, as he claims he intends to, he'll probably command a signing bonus of about $7 million, but he'd be a pretty good #2 wideout.

EEich 11-25-2004 12:45 PM

No thank you. He's bad news.

MTK 11-25-2004 01:18 PM

I'd rather stick with Gardner

Redskins_P 11-25-2004 02:00 PM

Porter is a home town guy. He played high school ball in DC. I think he would be a good #2 also. He has size and pretty good speed.

EEICH, why do you say he's bad news? Have you heard anything? I'm just asking because I haven't heard anything too negative about him.

Shane 11-25-2004 02:53 PM

Porter doesn't have the focus in my opinion to be someone you can rely on. I wouldn't trade any of our receivers for him. He hasn't been able to step up to be the guy his whole career and is seeing a bunch of rookies and young players catch all the balls at a time he should be coming into his own. He probably will never be able to star for any team.

aehs77 11-25-2004 04:29 PM

our recievers would be tight if they get out of the current funk they are in

Skins4SB 11-25-2004 06:24 PM

I wouldn't mid having him over Gardner. I don't hate Gardner, but I think Porter has better hands than Gardner. Why is Porter bad news?

skins009 11-25-2004 09:17 PM

We don't need Porter, we don't have the money, and we are fine at WR. What we need is to have surgery on LC toe, so he can be a big time threat again.

Daseal 11-25-2004 09:21 PM

I don't like the guy, but if we're going after another receiver (I like Gardner) we could try for Mike Williams out of USC (kinda)

skinsfanthru&thru 11-25-2004 10:38 PM

he'd be an upgrade over gardner but is gonna want way too much money for a #2 wr. I'd rather target a rookie wr in with one of our 1st 2 picks.

kingerock 11-26-2004 09:17 AM

I would like to see a consistant team for atleast 2 seasons. We aren't fixing anything with free agency, we've been down that road for years and it's never worked. I think Porter or Williams from USC would be great. But we have a roster of potentially great WRs in Coles, Gardner, Thrash, McCants and Jacobs. any of those guys have a breakout season and get in sync with a QB and we are marching to a championship with our great defense.

celts32 11-26-2004 10:39 AM

The last thing the Skins need to do is change all the pieces again this offseason. they need to let a plan unfold for once and not blow it up and start over again like they have done every offseason since Danny joined us. Porter for Gardner is an unneccesary switch. I think the Redskins should just keep the current players and fill holes with draft picks and work on molding the current roster. You can't make a big free agency splash every year.

Drift Reality 11-26-2004 11:57 AM

Receiver isn't the main issue with this team. They really need a speed rusher on the outside and a better center.

I'm really not that concerned about the receivers and they already have too much money invested in that area of the team.

wolfeskins 11-26-2004 12:31 PM

i tend to agree with celts32. the skins need to keep most of the players they have. make a few changes, maybe make some changes in gibbs' system, open things up just a little more to better fit ramsey and portis. shopping gardner around isn't a bad idea but not for another wr, an o-lineman or something.

skinsguy 11-26-2004 01:32 PM

Heck, we just need guys to throw the ball consistantly and accurately and guys to catch the ball consistantly and score. I don't care what name is on the jersey.

offiss 11-26-2004 03:31 PM

We can't go after a high priced free agent especially at WR, although I do feel we should cut bait with Gardner no matter how he finishes the season, we should get whatever we can for him but I don't think we will do better than a possible 3rd rd pick, William's would be a nice WR but he would cost us he is a top 10 pick, I don't see us taking someone in the top 10 I believe we will deal down and look for quantity rather than the high priced top 10 pick, If Wilson play's well sunday that could spell the end for Samuel's unless he is willing to renegotiate big time, if it's me I trade off both Samuels and Gardner for as many pick's as possible then deal down into the mid to late 1st round with our #1 and see what's available.

SmootSmack 11-26-2004 06:38 PM

Porter really only had that one good year, when everything was clicking for that Raiders offense.

Last year he, along with several other Raider players, went out to the media and bad mounted Bill Callahan in public. I've heard, though I can't confirm, that Porter has done the same thing with Norv Turner this year.

One thing you never hear Gardner do is bad mouth any coach or player in public.

GoSkins! 11-26-2004 06:53 PM

Did anyone else hear the interview when they were talking to Mcants and he was talking about Ramsey? When asked about his first catches this season he said something like "Ramsey knows me and knows where I like the ball". That my friends is what we are missing. We have all the talent that we need, especially at wide reciever. We just need to get these guys to all know the system and each other so well that they can just go out there and concentrate on dominating their opponent.

sportscurmudgeon 11-26-2004 09:58 PM

For the last couple of years, the "conventional wisdom" was the Jerry Porter was being held down by having Tim Brown and Jerry Rice ahead of him in terms of playing WR. Last year, Porter was injured for most of the year and when Brown was let go earlier this year the "conventional wisdom" said this would allow Porter to blossom.

Now Rice is gone too and Porter has done nothing to distinguish himself. Maybe - just maybe - he is a really good #3 receiver and not much more?

EEich 11-27-2004 01:36 AM

I guess it's mostly that I get a bad vibe about him... He was all set to be the Raiders #1 this year, but there were rumors that he didn't work very hard (hard to believe when you've had Jerry Rice as a mentor). And the results? Only 1 game over 100 yards.

This was one of the stories that gave me a bad feel:
