WHFS gone Loco

If anyone here listens to WHFS it is no more they are now a spanish radio station. I am so mad that Infinity Brodcasting would do something like this. Whoever listens boycott the station till they turn it back. Also spread the word to everyone I do not care who it is!!! :drink :drink :drink

aehs77 01-12-2005 09:03 PM

are you serious thats crazy. I have xm so i hardly listen to the radio any more gut still thats nuts

Riggo44 01-12-2005 10:02 PM

It happens.
My favorite station in high school was a rock station called KNAC. There a Spanish station now too. I can understand all the Mexican BS her in SoCal. But back east??
As Bob Dylan said"The times they are a changing."

Bozzy 01-12-2005 10:17 PM

Yeah it's insane. They didn't give any warning whatsoever. Not even to their DJs. Their staff came into work this morning to find they were fired.

Infinity Broadcasting has not even issued a press release.

I don't see many Mexicans in the DC/Baltimore area, so I do not understand why they are suddenly and without warning appealing to this demographic.

FRPLG 01-12-2005 10:18 PM

Change back is not gonna happen...they have no ratings whatever. The only reason they even showed up in the ratings was becasue of the Junkies in morning drive which was barely a blip. Noventa y Nuevo punto Uno is for real now.

SmootSmack 01-12-2005 10:23 PM

Well, I do agree that more warning should have been given. However, the numbers have been slipping over the past few years. Even the HFSestival has seen its attendance decline in recent years

And while there may be not many "Mexicans" per se in the DC area, there are a lot of Hispanics (myself included) who have been wanting a FM spanish radio station with a strong signal. Ironically though, I can't get 99.1 in my apartment, only in my car

That being said, I rarely listen to the radio anyway unless it's npr or sports talk. For the most part I just listen to my CDs when it comes to music

Bozzy 01-12-2005 10:25 PM

Another ironic part, I was actually planning on going to the next HFStival. I've never gone before.

Oh well.

JoeRedskin 01-12-2005 10:31 PM

HFS has been a has been for several years. The brains and heart of the station left when it was bought by infinity and went to 103.1 RNR. Great Station - "playlist? we don't need no stinkin' playlist!!"

Daseal 01-12-2005 10:43 PM

HFS has gone downhill, and Smootsmack - you can listen to ORTEGA! Some woman at work listens to it, it's absolutely horrible. It's music that was released in America three years ago translated into Spanish with someone yelling inaubidable sounds overtop of the vocals.

I must say I am a Molotov fan though. No idea what they're saying, but it's fun!

Hey Bozzy you ever been down in P.G county? There are many large pockets of hispanic communities all around D.C.

Bozzy 01-13-2005 12:06 AM

Really? Wow

htownskinfan 01-13-2005 08:28 AM

clear channel just did that to rock 101 here in houston, been on the air for over 30 yrs, poof, gone in a second, now spanish, but listeners raised enough hell and signed petitions that cumulus is going to start a rock station on 97.5 and bring in the 101 dj's that were fired

Doubt if that will happen here. In its prime, HFS was not just a rock station, it was true free form radio. There were times when you just didn't know what was going be played next - 50's rockabilly followed by some modern alternative (before "alternative" was mainstream) followed by Led Zeppelin followed Little Feat followed by Hank Williams - with lots of local artist thrown in. It was truly amazing (I swear I even heard opera once). After they got bought by Infinity, they simply focused in on "pop alt" (everything after and including the grunge movement). I haven't even had them as one of my radio buttons for a couple of years.

RNR is close to HFS in its heyday. Not quite the free-form HFS was but still MUCH MUCH more than you here anywhere else. There really are very few stations like RNR in the country.

So to HFS I say - so long. You were mighty once. I am sorry they didn't let you die with dignity.

Daseal 01-13-2005 09:34 AM

In the fairfax area they actually have the 3rd largest population of hispanics in the country (according to the 2000 or 2001 Census, things could have certainly changed since then.)

skin4Life28 01-13-2005 10:07 AM

Yeah it is really wrong how they treated there dj's no warning at all. I was watchin the news and they had an HFS promo playing at 11:59 and right at 12 it went straight to the new station cutting there promo.

SmootSmack 01-13-2005 10:29 AM

Within the local DC media, rumors of a change in format at HFS have been going on for months so the dj's weren't taken completely by surprise, it's the listeners that were

SmootSmack 01-13-2005 10:33 AM

Rumor has it 94.3 might switch to HFS' old format

BDBohnzie 01-13-2005 10:35 AM

if you go to http://www.dcrtv.org/index.html, and go down to this headline:
HFS Goes Spanish - 1/12

you'll see a link for the last waning moments of HFS...

it's a bloody shame...but Infinity ruined that station long ago...

also from that link...the head of Empire Broadcasting is trying to acquite 94.3 in Warrenton (currently a Spanish station) to pair it's signal with the Annapolis 94.3 to recreate WRNR...

Tim Virgin (the only DJ even worth a damn left at HFS) is moving to NYC...

irish 01-13-2005 10:43 AM

Bozzy, Arlington has a large mexican population as well. Apparently there is a lot of money to be made in the spanish radio market. Hopefully the junkies will get picked-up somewhere.

Redskins_P 01-13-2005 11:19 AM
what the hell is ORTEGA? I'm talking real latin music. Redskins P knows what I'm talkin about
Smootsmack, I know exactly what you're talking about. The real latin music can only be found on radio stations in NYC, and Miami. Also, latin music is NOT "mexican"!!! Huge difference. By the way, in NYC and Miami they have at least 3 to 4 latin stations on FM.

Well, since I'm hispanic like Smootsmack this news doesn't really bother me. I really didn't know about it till just now listening to DC-101. I personally always preferred DC-101 over WHFS. So, to me this is a non-issue.

But to the HFS fans out there, I understand how you could feel. Especially since the format changed so dramatically. I mean from Alt.Rock to Latin format?? Thats pretty crazy. Maybe if they would've kept a similar format it wouldn't be such a big deal.

For all of you who are not from DC metro area, this area has become a melting pot. It's diversity can be compared to NYC. Just goes to show how much this area has grown......culturally.

Smootsmack, I have no idea what Ortega is. Maybe someones last name? Who knows! All I know is that we're taking over baby!!! :silly:

cpayne5 01-13-2005 11:26 AM

There was a country station out here on AM that had been around since the beginning of time. It had a fairly large following considering it was AM. One day it turned to a Spanish speaking station for no given reason. It still seems odd, considering where we are.

Very odd Cpayne.....especially in the area that you're in. Where I live if you tune to AM you can hear everything from, gospel, latin, middle eastern, korean, and sports talk.

I rarely listen to the radio anymore, and when I do it's either Stern or ESPN radio.

The radio blows, unless you have a good college or independent station in the area it's all the same recycled garbage.

I'm lucky enough to have an independent station in my area out of Vermont, 102.7 WEQX. That's basically the only channel worth listening to on my FM dial in my opinion.

backrow 01-13-2005 12:38 PM
I rarely listen to the radio anymore,(Agreed) And when I do it's or ESPN, Christian, or smooth Jazz radio!
(Quotted, but not exactly!)

I listen to a lot of tapes & CDs on making money, investments, and such!

BDBohnzie 01-13-2005 01:30 PM

the latest rumor of the Junkies is that they will be back on WJFK middays, sandwiched between Howard Stern and Don & Mike...until Stern makes the jump, at which time I would assume they move into the morning slot...

TheMalcolmConnection 01-13-2005 01:40 PM

I hate that Howard Stern is going to go on satellite radio. I really don't want to have to foot that bill just to listen. I know it's not much, but I have other things I could use that money on.

cpayne5 01-13-2005 02:17 PM

If you like Stern that much, and if Sirius is as good as XM (which I assume it is), it's really worth it.

I bought XM just for ESPN Radio, and that alone is worth it.

MTK 01-13-2005 02:23 PM

I'm really going to miss Stern in the mornings, but I can't justify getting satellite radio right now, I only have a 20-minute commmute.

cpayne5 01-13-2005 02:29 PM

I'm pretty sure that Sirius streams over the net, so if your coworkers don't mind hoarding the bandwidth, you can listen to it that way.

TheMalcolmConnection 01-13-2005 02:42 PM

Sweet... I haven't dealt with satellite radio too much. Is Stern on NOW or does he come back in like the end of this year? I'm stuck watching re-runs on E!.

Cush 01-13-2005 02:44 PM

I quit listening to HFS when they started to mix rap into their line up

Redskins_P 01-13-2005 02:50 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did go to HFStival last year, and it wasn't that great. Too many teenagers. I felt so old there. Not to mention how hot it was.

The only reason why I went was to see Jay-Z and Cypress Hill.

cpayne5 01-13-2005 02:51 PM

TheMalcolmConnection 01-13-2005 03:00 PM

Excellent. Thanks man.

BDBohnzie 01-14-2005 11:10 AM

both XM and Sirius have streaming audio...it's part of the Sirius package of $12.95/mo, but you have to pay an extra 4 bucks/month to have it with XM, or bump it up to $13.98/mo. neither is expensive, but i'm like others who say they have better things to spend their money on...i may break down eventually, but not anytime soon...unless 980 in DC goes away...although i cant stand John Thompson...it should be the Al and Doc Show...

i went to the HFStival in '99...actually went to both that year...it's was fun, but to me, if you've gone once, that's enough...

MTK 01-14-2005 11:19 AM
I'm pretty sure that Sirius streams over the net, so if your coworkers don't mind hoarding the bandwidth, you can listen to it that way.
I don't think that would fly, but thanks for the suggestion.

BDBohnzie 01-14-2005 12:03 PM

XM has that new MyFi, that is like a portable iPod for XM radio...and Sirius will probably have something similar...there are definite ways around using a stream...however, you have to commit bucks to do so...

SkinsRock 01-14-2005 02:56 PM

Satellite radio is the sole reason that stations like WHFS are/were struggling....well, that combined with being ruined by corporate radio giants like Infinity and Clear Channel.
In the late 80's and early 90's you couldn't get much better than HFS for modern rock in the DC/Balt area, but by 2000, they were already headed downhill, thanks to the corporate ownership. Thank goodness Jake Einstein started up WRNR, which is basically a current version of what HFS was in the 80's....the DJ's basically play whatever they want!
Another thing, the way this is being portrayed by their two main former competitors runs from one end of the spectrum to the other, and exemplifies (sp?) why I and many other people feel the way we do about the two cities. 98 ROCK in Baltimore is like "whoopie!"...saying that "they won", and turning it into total self-promotion. While Washington's DC101 is handling it with total class and paying their respects to the fact that HFS was an innovator, and in it's heyday, had a huge effect on the area. That along with offering condolences to the entire staff that lost their jobs with no notice.
As someone who pretty much grew up in the area, even though it wasn't anything near what it once was, and I hardly listened to them anymore, the fact that WHFS is no more is a sad thing.
